𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠: Navigating #strategy in the flow of complexity.

@snowded - An estuary isn’t a delta; in a delta, the river flows out to the ocean, but in an estuary, the sea flows back in, creating a constant movement where some things can only be done at the turn of the tide and not while the water is rushing. Some parts of that landscape, like granite cliffs, barely change and only need attention every few decades, while other parts shift daily. That metaphor captures the world we work in now.

𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 uses this insight by plotting constraints on a grid of energy cost vs. time-to-change, then identifying the counterfactual line, the boundary beyond which things will not change. So we can see the real space in which action is possible. It doesn’t ask “𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞?” but “What is the environment we’re actually operating in, and how do we stabilise it?” Because whatever has the lowest energy gradient wins: if it’s easier to do the wrong thing than the right thing, people will default to it.

In complexity, you don’t force behaviour; you change conditions so that good outcomes become easier and more likely, then reinforce them, which shifts from predicting to navigating, from controlling to shaping, and changes everything.
