Last year, SEN Radio sacked senior journalist Peter Lalor over tweets that expressed solidarity with Palestinians.

Usman Khawaja, in response, refused to do an interview with SEN in solidarity with Lalor.

As Khawaja announces his retirement from cricket, he leaves behind a legacy that goes far beyond his numbers.

Khawaja was a bloody good cricketer. He won't be ranked among the greats of all time.

But he's been a much better role model than most of our cricketing gods could ever be.

In his retirement press conference, he speaks about the importance of speaking out on issues outside of cricket.

He reiterated his support for Palestine, and called out politicians for sowing hate and Islamophobia.

Sadly, we don't make cricketers like that anymore.

You'll be missed Uzzie. At a time most cricketers prefer to stay quiet, worry about endorsements and shy away from controversies, you walked the talk.

At a time most of our cricketers towed the line of the government, you spoke up even if it meant it made you unpopular in some sections.

On field, you were brilliant. Off the field, you were even better. Happy retirement, Usman Khawaja, you'll be missed ❤️

It’s so uncomfortable yet too familiar watching the attack on Jude Bellingham‘s character because he won’t just smile and be grateful to be playing for England.
Because he won’t contort to fit in the box some want to squeeze him in.

Because he decided against the Premier League to go from Birmingham City to Borussia Dortmund then Real Madrid. Because his close circle don’t subscribe to being matey to get good PR.
Because adidas made an advert about him. Because he declined doing media duties at the Euros, directly addressed the pile-on he faced, and called out being scapegoated.
Because he didn’t just let people talk “rubbish,” he responded.
Because he is HIM - but he’s just meant to smile and be grateful to play for England.

Tomorrow Mo Chara is back in Westminster Magistrates Court as the British government's carnival of distraction continues.

Since his last court appearance Israel has murdered another 9,000 Palestinians, mainly children and women.

Over 1,000 murdered whilst queuing for aid, starved due to their siege, whilst pitiful amounts of aid delivered by a sham agency controlled by Israel.

Young children gunned down by snipers as they scramble for a bag of flour.

Whole families, from babies to grandparents, murdered as they huddled in makeshift tents.

The IOF have since moved through Gaza turning what's left of homes, schools and hospitals to literal dust.

Evil beyond any fucking words.

As the British state arms and supports these war crimes they'll have Mo Chara in court in London tomorrow to try to label him a terrorist.....
