CHINA’S HIMALAYAN INFRA BUILD UP IS CREATING "PEAK" INSTABILITY.

NEPAL IS SCARRED, INDIA COULD BE NEXT

China has launched a national emergency response, deploying rescue forces after a massive mudslide and flash flood hit the Chinese border port of Gyirong.

The video captures the horror. But it also captures the scale of the rescue operation that now has to be mounted. And it tells you a cautionary story.

A story of how China has built industriously to "colonise" Tibet especially in some of the most ecologically sensitive, seismically active and geologically unstable terrain on earth.

While there is no evidence that Chinese construction caused this particular event. But when infrastructure is built its human meddling in a volatile and delicate geography.

Around Gyirong itself, the Chinese have developed the Jilong/Gyirong border port and are upgrading the road corridor towards Nepal. Beijing and Kathmandu have also been advancing plans for the China-Nepal cross-border railway, including the difficult Himalayan section through the Gyirong corridor, alongside tunnels, highways, power transmission and logistics infrastructure.

And further East, the scale becomes almost difficult to comprehend.

On the Yarlung Tsangpo, the Tibetan name for the Brahmaputra, China already has the Zangmu hydropower station. The Jiacha project has also been operationalised, while Dagu and Jiexu were among the additional projects planned on the river. Shockingly, China has begun construction of what is expected to become the world's largest hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo, near the Great Bend of the river. A project that could dwarf even the ecologically ruinous Three Gorges Dam.

Downstream of course lie Indian settlements. China says these projects are about clean energy, development and prosperity. But infrastructure is never just infrastructure.

On a transboundary river, control over infrastructure can also create leverage over the flows on which downstream populations depend.

This is why some critics, in Nepal and even the Central Tibet Administration have called it the weaponisation of development.

China always makes it a point to project itself as a pacifist power. But ask Sri Lanka and some other Chinese neighbours if they agree. It's becoming more apparent to them that China's expansionist strategic objectives are repeatedly disguised as infrastructure altruism.

Over the last 24 hours, however, the Chinese have been confronted with the limitations of this approach.

The Himalayas have raged against attempts to engineer them into submission.
