Madurai's Meenakshi Sundareshwara Temple is celebrating its grand Maha Kumbabhishekam right now, but most people have no idea how close this temple came to disappearing completely...

In the 14th century, Sultanate forces marched south to Pandyan lands, looting temples and destroying deities on the way. The king fled the capital. With no royal protection left, the city's priests knew the temple wouldn't survive an open confrontation.

They decided to do something brilliant.

The Sthanikars, the temple caretakers, sealed the main shrine with a stone wall, putting up a false Lingam in front of it. Goddess Meenakshi was hidden on top of the shrine’s vimana, and several other deities were buried underground to keep them safe.

Still, someone had to stay behind. That job went to the priest of the Kariyamanikka Perumal shrine. He remained in a city under foreign occupation, guarding a god he couldn't openly worship, with no army and no guarantee he'd survive the years ahead.

The Madurai Sultanate ruled over the city for a gruelling period of around 48 years!

The 14 gopuras and several shrines were destroyed during this period, along with the Kariyamanikka Perumal shrine. The people were subjected to many horrors, as recorded in Ibn Battuta's and Ganga Devi's writings.

According to the Madhura Vijayam, Goddess Meenakshi herself appealed to the Vijayanagara Prince Kampana, urging him to free Madurai from foreign rule. She says:

“The coconut trees of Madurai have been cut down by these intruders, and in place of these, we have gruesome substitutes in the form of iron sula, which are adorned with garlands of decapitated human heads...”

Prince Kampana led a campaign to reclaim the Tamil lands from the Madurai Sultanate, restoring all the affected temples. When he reopened the sanctum of the Madurai temple, he saw a divine miracle.

The lamp lit decades ago was still burning bright! The flowers and decoration of the deity hadn't wilted at all!

Even today, you can see the decoy Lingam in the temple’s ardha mandapa, bearing the marks of the Sultanate swords. It is a reminder of what our ancients did to keep this temple alive for our generation.

Let us honour and remember our ancestors' countless sacrifices. Without them, we wouldn't have this temple today.
