First, the American apple companies will remain in business and will grow, leading to increased employment. This outcome will seem like a successful policy. However, there is a secondary effect that is less visible but just as real and impactful as the initial effect.

You haven't considered the impact on consumers. They were accustomed to buying apples for $5, but now they can only purchase them for $7. That's an additional $2 they could have saved if the tariff hadn't been imposed. This $2 is money that could have been spent on other things, potentially boosting another American industry.

It is indeed true that apple companies and their employees will receive protection. However, this does not result in a net increase in the country’s industrial output or overall employment. The American consumer will end up paying an additional $2 for the same quality apples, which means they will have less money to spend on other items. As a consequence, consumers will need to cut back on their expenditures in other areas. While apple companies may grow, other companies in different industries could face a decline.

This effect is difficult to trace and not easily visible, so it is understandable that policymakers are trying to implement these trade barriers again.
