In 2014, Peter Thiel gave a 1-hour masterclass on how to build a monopoly from scratch.

He broke down how:
• Google became untouchable
• PayPal beat the odds
• Facebook crushed competition

Here are 11 timeless lessons from his masterclass:

1. Create value, then capture it

Elon Musk admits there have been times he thought Larry Page was right about AI

Walter Isaacson: "Does that mean humans should always be in control?"

Elon Musk: "I’d probably prefer it if humans were always in control. Although it would depend on the AI. If the AI was awesome, you’d say maybe the AI should be in control"

Walter Isaacson: "I saw Larry Page just a weekend ago. You’re starting to sound like him. He called you a speciesist once for deciding humans should always be in control"

Elon Musk: "Honestly, there have been a few times where I thought, yeah, maybe Larry Page was right. I think pretty much the future is going to be AI and robots deciding the future"

Elon Musk reveals why he thinks humans won’t stay in control of AI

"I find it unlikely that humans would remain in control. If there’s a million times more digital intelligence than biological intelligence, it’s hard to imagine humans being in control in that scenario. So I hope the AI is nice to us"

"We want to be careful about creating too many AI dystopian scenarios online, because the AIs are trained on everything online. They’ve read 80 versions of the Terminator script, so it’s like, I guess that’s me. Terminator"

"Let’s just have some more utopian narratives for AI. So then it can be like, well, maybe I shouldn’t be Terminator. Maybe I can be a friendly overseer, or like a gardener. Try to make humans happy"

Elon Musk reveals he checked Anthropic for "evil" before renting them his compute

"We are providing them with compute, which they really needed. But before I rented them compute, I went and met with a bunch of people at Anthropic to see if anyone set off my evil detector. Not that my evil detector is perfect, of course"

"Everyone I met at Anthropic was very nice and conscientious. I didn’t meet anyone who seemed shady or deceptive"

"I'm a little worried about the name, because reality being kind of an irony maximizer, if you call something Anthropic, good chance it’s misanthropic. Stability AI is unstable. Midjourney is not mid. It seems like they’re all kind of the opposite of their name"

Anthropic's @logangraham predicts AI will match the world's best hackers by early 2027:

Claude can already do things only 1,000 people on Earth have ever done.

"By the end of this year to first quarter-ish of next year, it’ll just be clearly perceived that these are as autonomous and as sophisticated as the best offensive actors on Earth."

"We have this graph that we tried to plot internally, where we try to estimate whenever we see Claude do a very sophisticated thing, how many people on Earth could do that. We’re now at the range of, some of these capabilities, there’s maybe only 10,000. In some cases, there’s only 1,000 people on Earth who’ve done something like this."

"We’ll go from autonomous cyber tasks to sophisticated and exotic things. Side channel attacks, models finding loopholes in physics. Or social engineering. Get a Twilio account, voice API, and phish some information from somebody’s parents."

"The flip side is also true. We will probably have very wide proliferation of models as defenders as well, actively defending a network."

Geoffrey Hinton on the "really stupid thing" Trump did to AI, and why he says tech leaders went along with it

"For many years, the term superintelligence has been used to mean AIs that are more intelligent than people. We're not quite there yet. Just taking the current AIs and calling them superintelligence doesn't make them more intelligent than people"

"So it's a really stupid thing to do, and I'm amazed at the tech leaders who've gone along with it"

"They want to ingratiate themselves with Trump"

Jensen Huang reveals how Europe's AI can still be "sovereign" even when it runs on American chips:

"Sovereignty basically means you have to control your own experience. In the case of AI, that means control your own data, your country's culture and values, the institutional knowledge of your people. The computer is just an instrument"

"Sovereignty means that nobody could deny you service. It's like electricity, like the internet, like water. Those are critical resources for your society. You can't ever have a denial of service"

"Sovereignty means you have the ability to determine your own destiny. You might need teamwork, collaboration, partnership and support from other people. But you have agency"

Marc Andreessen on why he thinks Europe actually wants to be left behind on AI

"Europe seems, I just take them at their word, determined to be left behind. They seem enthusiastic about being left behind. They seem to really badly want that"

"25 years ago, if you did a list of the 50 biggest tech companies in the world, a pretty significant number were European, probably 15 of the top 50. Today you're basically down to Spotify. Which is great. I love Spotify"

"I think they would be very happy if AI didn't happen inside the EU. I think they'd be very happy if social media didn't exist. I think they'd be quite happy to shut up the internet"

Jensen Huang says Nvidia would stop selling chips to an AI lab doing something too dangerous

"It's a hypothetical, but of course, yeah. But before you do so, you would have that conversation. We don't run other people's companies, and there's a limit to the judgment we apply to other companies' use of our technology. Our technology is general purpose"

"Imposing our values on other people's companies, or institutions or countries, that's really largely out of balance. But if we know for certain that an application of our technology is bringing harm to people, of course"

[Jaynit @jaynitx]

Marc Andreessen on why cities ended up with $3 million homes, public housing, and no middle class

"There's a French geographer who has the best analysis on this, a great book called Twilight of the Elites. If you replant the commanding heights of your economy on knowledge work, you're going to slam basically all economic growth into the cities"

"The cities become a magnet for two kinds of people. The highly educated elite who can afford $3 million houses, and then public housing. Who's squeezed out is the entire middle class. If you're a cop or a firefighter and you work in Palo Alto, you can be commuting 3 hours both ways just to have a house and afford a family"

"You look at the cities and there's lots of dogs, very few kids. You can't buy a house, you can't have a family. You've ejected the middle out of the cities into the countryside, but you've deindustrialized, so there's no new economic activity happening in the countryside"

[Jaynit @jaynitx]

Marc Andreessen reveals why housing, health care, and education keep getting more expensive while everything else gets cheaper

"There's basically three components to the American dream. A house near great job opportunities, great health care for you and your family, and sending your kids to good schools"

"If you disaggregate the economy over the last 25 years, everything that technology touches basically collapses in price. Television sets, computer games, anything with electronics in it. But if you chart housing, education, and health care, the prices of those things are skyrocketing"

"The government restricts supply, zoning laws and university certifications. And then the government responds to the political pressure caused by the rising prices by subsidizing demand. And of course, if you subsidize demand and a fixed supply, you get skyrocketing prices"

[Mark Cuban @mcuban]

No
Any electronic product benefits from tech improvements , but requires there be no component or other scarcity. (See critical minerals risk, memory and GPUs scarcity, forcing up pricing )

Housing - government can make it worse for sure, by introducing artificial scarcity. But we aren’t making any new land, we are exporting home buyers, and we aren’t making enough babies Builders require growth. When there is population scarcity, they stop building.

Education and Healthcare both require some level of hands on, human delivered, personalization, and customization. Which, as any investor will tell you, is far harder to scale profitably. That said, both suffer from individuals who try to extract as much as they can for personal gain, and use regulatory capture to capture to exclude those who would create more value for less cost.
