I was in SS3 when my father died. We had not yet enrolled for WAEC because we had just resumed SS3.

While on his sickbed, he called me and asked about my preparations. I explained my challenges to him and told him I had not yet bought the recommended textbooks.

After listening to me, he lifted his pillow and gave me money to buy the textbooks. I bought the books and returned to show them to him. He prayed for me and told me to ensure that nothing distracted me from reading them and furthering my education.

That advice changed my life because it came from the heart of a dying man. Every word from my father's lips exposed his genuine desire to see me succeed. He spoke to me with his eyes fixed to my eyes, in a tensed but solemn atmosphere.

I saw hell after my dad's demise, but each time I felt like giving up, I remembered his words.

My dad was not rich. I knew what it meant for him to empty his savings from under his pillow just to ensure that I had a future.

To every father out there who is struggling and making sacrifices for his children, may God make life easy for you. The world may not celebrate you, but the hearts of the children whose lives you touch will never remain the same.

Unrelated, but back in school I had a hostel mate who was dating an actual genius. They were both in Mathematics. The guy worked insanely hard just to maintain a 4.2 GPA each semester, while his girlfriend casually pulled a 5.0.

In 2015, they had to borrow a course from my department, so they reached out and we formed a small night class group to study together. I didn’t even spend up to 40 minutes with them before it became obvious. this girl had already mastered everything. Meanwhile, her boyfriend (who was already very smart himself) was still asking questions.

Fast forward to results: she scored 95 (A). I struggled to get 70 (A).

When I later spoke to the guy about it, he said something that has stuck with me ever since: “Her failure range is 70–75 A… where brilliant people are fighting just to get a B.”

That was the moment I understood there are certain people you simply don’t compete with in life. And it’s not just in academics.

Just look at Lionel Messi.

I had the opportunity to be in the house of an Ex-General who ruled Nigeria. While in his house, he spoke about complicity within the ranks especially on the topic of Insurgency.

Some officers with him were arguing that they had the manpower, but were being sabotaged from the 'top', while others maintained that the communication channels were insecure.

The General allowed everyone to talk for over an hour without any interjection. Then he rolled his wheelchair to face his reading table, raised the receiver from his intercom and requested the presence of a very senior major.

When this Major came in, General asked him to recount one of his numerous experiences to us, so we can understand the depth of what we were facing.

In the course of this piece, Alhaji will be the name of the Major.

He began:

"One evening, we were patrolling within the Birnin Gwari Axis with elements from 2bn. We were going towards jaji, but we came under attack, a very heavy one at that. Some of our men scampered and entered the bush, while some were killed. I was among the 4 that were captured by these bandits and taken to the bush.

We were kept there for 3 days, no food or water. Mosquitos had their field week with our blood, but we were not demoralized. We were looking for the slightest opportunity to present itself so we can escape.

On the 4th day, they decided to move us, but something happened. A top lieutenant among them just came from their other location and immediately called out my name, Alhaji!!!

I was shocked because my name tag was lost in the whole chaos so how could this person have called my name with such accuracy.

While I was engrossed in my thoughts, he called me again, this time with a name I recognized because only one person calls me that name in this life, and that person was my coursemate who was withdrawn from NDA as a cadet!

I called his name and he responded. He just looked at the 4 of us, shook his head and told us to run without looking back.

He said 'kai Alhaji you're lucky. Avoid this route because if they see you again, they'll kill you!'

He told his boys to give us bread, dates and water, then told us to run.

We ran till we heard car sounds, then we continued till we got to the road, begged for a ride and were taken to the barracks."

He ended his story, saluted the General and excused himself.

The room went quiet for a few minutes before the General spoke. He made us understand that all these terrorists had trainers who are Ex NDA cadets, ex-naval, army and airforce personnel.

NDA has dismissed or withdrawn cadets who have undergone Airborne, amphibious, counter terrorism and tracker courses. They know how to listen in on radio channel communication, they're experts in tactics, map-reading, weapon handling, tactical survival. They've attended and completed all the camps the military has to offer in their NDA days. Some are withdrawn on the day of their POP.

These people can never flourish in a civilian world so they get into the thing closest to their training.

The lady that sleeps beside me here on camp couldn’t sleep throughout the night. She was wide awake crying. I woke up from sleep and asked her what happened. She said terrorists attacked Igbaja here in Kwara state. Her parent and her baby are there.

I just saw a video where the babe said she moved to a new environment and found a salon close by to make her hair, the stylist's daughter asked her for 3k but she gave her 1k, The stylist herself asked for a loan, the house keeper she got through the stylist started asking for favours too.
I say she encouraged it.

The same way my husband and I enabled entitlement.
The first laundry helper I got ehn, after working, I would serve her food on the dinning, and then give her some packs of noodles, bread and raw eggs for her children at home.
Hubby felt the money she asked for was too small for the work she was doing and he would always add something or round it up.

The last day she came to work, hubby couldn't afford to top up as usual, noodles had finished ( it was time to restock the house), I served her toast bread, fried sausages, fried eggs and tea instead of the usual swallow. Hubby begged her o, that next time he'll do her well. It was clearly written on her face that she wasn't happy.

We called her after that and she replied nonchalantly that she has other people's work to do too and she would not be able to make it😂.
