If I must choose
Must it be pride over prejudice?
Or hope over experience?
Is reason better than doubt?
Should one renounce
Friendship for love?
Or happiness for contentment?
Must one take the road less travelled
Or should I stay here
At the lonely fork
Till sunset and the stars
What is blood
That you have not tasted your own,
The wind knocked out
Of your lungs,
Tattered and broken
You have not risen from the dust,
And stood there,
Dazed,
But still determined,
For it was worth
Every straining sinew
And that taste of blood
And grit
In your mouth
In silence did I wander
Lost and alone
Through realms of time
But now I return
From the depths I arise
To the land of memories
Under familiar skies
How the world has changed
But I stand now here
Amidst familiar faces
A tapestry woven
Of forgotten embraces

A spring afternoon
On the verandah
Bright sun
A cold nip still lingers
Birds, whistling, chattering
Old songs and conversation
From a neighbour's window
The book
Now condemned to remain
Half-read for another day
The coffee mug
Perched precariously
Looks back
With a half-smile
The true king returns
To a cheering people
A grand new palace
With an imposing steeple
The ancient verses
Chanted by the priest
The jubilant citizens
Prepare a feast
To have rebuilt the temple
After five hundred years
The blood, the sweat
And the streaming tears
I think it was the real reason
Why it took that it all fell apart
Watching cheery stones
As they sink into the water
Did you grow out of it?
Pillow talk
And arguments
On long walks
Along the old canal
With cotton-grass
Blowing in the wind
White fluff
Scattered
Hither and thither
Like the influence
Of a meme
Real or imagined
Strait-jacketed
A tie, a noose around my neck
I check-in, & check-out
Of an office
In the corner of my room
With a book-laden backdrop
Placed cleverly
While I argue
Unapologetically
With long forgotten friends
In Whatsapp groups
The facts are so
By rights and definitions
On paper and argument
Seen this way and that
Turning them around
Over and over
In my mind and yours
Discussed
Debated
Surmised
To the point that.....
..... the conclusion was inescapable
I walk alone
Along ancient steps
Stretching along the river
Far away from the constant cackle
Of words without meaning
Here I watch Time
The ripples in the river
And the ripples of Time
That give eternal Kashi
Meaning without words
The humid anticipation
Of a Chennai afternoon
The dripping sweat
The heavy breath
As we wait
The sun reflected
Off the lazy waves
Waiting, waiting
For the dark elephant clouds
Gathering like a Chola army
In the far distance
Promising a deluge
Scribbled notes
On sheets of paper
Some vague, some insightful
Connected somehow
To the very thing I have tried to understand
Perhaps I scribble to
To tame the question before me
Or perhaps
So not have to answer it
To avoid confronting
The issue that I must resolve
Eventually
They listen rapt
To the learned speaker
Words of wisdom
To the earnest seeker
In their souls
The storm still rages
The balm of thoughts
Passed down the ages
Through the night
And into the dawn
He speaks calmly
Till their fears are gone
A wrong turn
In a crowded city
A perfect mix
Of wit and pity
The indelible mark
Of a twist of fate
Brings the defeated
To Fortune's gate
For what is true
and what is not
Churns one's life
And destiny's lot
Once a dream
But now a riddle
I cross the threshold
And face the middle
The brooding wait
In an empty lounge
For journeys
That never happen
But memories
That evolve
In countless wanderings
And many retellings
To lands forgotten,
Sometimes forgiven
And in a flash
Of inspiration
Or indignation
A twist in the plot
A character shot
In awe, we witness their great return,
The ruined temples alive once more,
As the gods bring forth their sacred yearn,
To be worshipped again, forevermore.
4/n
In the ruins of temples, forgotten gods lie,
Their glory faded, their stories untold,
Their altars crumbled, beneath the open sky,
Their worshipers long gone, and prayers turned cold.
1/n
From the rubble, the gods begin to stir,
Their power awakening, their spirits rise,
Their voices heard, as their presence blurs
The lines between earth and the heavenly skies.
