Or do we just sign someone else to a minimum?
Free agent 7-footer Branden Carlson has agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million deal to sign with the Portland Trail Blazers, sources tell ESPN. Portland picks up a big man who has developed in the OKC Thunder system over the last two seasons, finalizing a deal with @PrioritySports' Ross Aroyo and Mark Bartelstein.
Sources: The Portland Trail Blazers signed Robert Williams to a 3-year, $44 million deal, which includes $5 million partially guaranteed Year 2, and is fully non-guaranteed Year 3. Years 2 and 3 become fully guaranteed if he plays 50+ regular-season games in the prior season.
A potential near exact salary match trade framework between the Celtics and Trail Blazers involving Jaylen Brown:
Boston ($68.4 million): Jrue Holiday, Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, draft compensation
Portland ($67.9 million): Brown + Sam Hauser
Trail Blazers salary cap situation after trading for Ja Morant.
They are hard capped to the first apron by using a 125 percent trade exception to acquire him.
They still have tax room to make additional moves like re-signing Robert Williams and using the $15M mid-level.
If the Blazers remain in pursuit of Jaylen Brown, Portland could still build a trade package around Jrue Holiday, younger players such as Shaedon Sharpe, Toumani Camara, or Scoot Henderson, and multiple first-round picks.
The Blazers are making moves in the West.
The Trail Blazers still have plenty of salary-matching options to acquire Jaylen Brown from the Celtics, even after trading Jerami Grant for Ja Morant:
Jrue Holiday: $34.8 million
Shaedon Sharpe: $20.1 million
Toumani Camara: $18.1 million
Scoot Henderson: $13.6 million
Acquiring Ja Morant feels like a set-up trade to me given all the Jaylen Brown rumors in Portland. Now the Blazers could feel more comfortable sending Jrue Holiday, Scoot Henderson, and Shaedon Sharpe with draft picks to Boston for Jaylen Brown. We'll see what happens.
