I am not persuaded by the argument I see often on the left that you have to essentially lie to people about your political commitments and affiliations to get them to your side. Whether it’s about being a socialist or about what needs to be done about policing. To me that betrays a sort of parochial view of the working class that infantilizes them and makes them out to be unable to comprehend concepts that Marxists should always believe they can handle and see value in.

socialists are supposed to be attempting to dictate the terms of political engagement as opposed to allowing it to dictate you. and when that is the case—when it is electoral viability, Nate Silver’s polls that are determining what should be pushed and further developed and what should be betrayed, the precedent has already written what is inevitable in the near future. today, policing. tomorrow palestine/ICE/trans people/whoever the fuck the american public has determined can be disposed of in furtherance of some nebulous goal. jfc
