Over the past five days, thousands of Syrians and Lebanese have crossed into Syria as a result of the ongoing bombings in Lebanon.

@UNHCRinSYRIA teams are present at the border day and night, supporting the Syrian authorities in providing transportation and essential relief items to families arriving exhausted and often with very few belongings.

The Government of Syria deserves recognition not only for welcoming back its own citizens, but also for providing safety to Lebanese.

Particularly at this critical moment, it is essential that these escape routes remain open and secure.

According to Syrian authorities, around 11,000 people crossed from Lebanon into Syria on 2 March, well above the usual daily average, following the recent hostilities in Lebanon.

Most of those arriving were Syrian families, although some Lebanese families also crossed into Syria.

@UNHCRinSYRIA teams are present at both Jdeidet Yabous and Joussieh border crossings, and we have contingency measures in place should the influx increase further.

This includes pre-positioned supplies inside Syria and support through our regular programmes in community centres as well as shelter and livelihoods assistance.

At the border, Syrian authorities are supporting people through a dedicated window where families can access information on where to seek help across Syria, including services provided by UNHCR.

UNHCR will support the authorities in assisting Syrians and Lebanese who may require humanitarian assistance upon arrival in Syria.
