🚨🎙️ Roy Keane on the clash between Lamine Yamal and Facundo Bernal that resulted in a controversial red card:
🗣️"Honestly, what on earth am I watching here? The state of modern officiating is an absolute disgrace to the game. You look at that incident between Facundo Bernal and Lamine Yamal—how the referee comes away from that giving Bernal a straight red card while Yamal gets away with a simple slap on the wrist is beyond me. It’s embarrassing.
You cannot simply punish the Betis lad for reacting without holding Yamal fully accountable for starting the whole thing. What Bernal did is a reaction to an action—it’s a direct chain of events that Yamal intentionally ignited. Yamal goes over, provokes him, gets right in his face, and then as soon as there’s a bit of pushback, he falls to the deck and the referee falls for it hook, line, and sinker. If you’re going to sanction Bernal for a headbutt, you’ve got to sanction Yamal with the exact same severity for sparking the clash. You can’t treat one as a villain and the other as an innocent bystander.
These are the matches that define a season. Games at grounds like La Cartuja—high intensity, tight margins—these are the fixtures that decide who actually lifts the league title at the end of the year. And to have a referee completely ruin the contest by making such a spineless, completely one-sided decision is unacceptable. It totally shifts the momentum of the game and penalizes a team for a reaction that wouldn't have even happened if the official controlled the instigator in the first place. Football’s gone proper soft, and decisions like this are ruining the competitive spirit of the sport."
