This man, Joshua Nkomo, was so honourable and did so many things that many African politicians would not be able to do.

On 14 August 1978, Ian Smith secretly flew to Lusaka and met Joshua Nkomo. The talks were facilitated by Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, British Foreign Secretary David Owen and Nigerian officials.

Smith proposed bringing Nkomo into the transitional government and positioning him to become the first leader, effectively the Prime Minister, of majority-ruled Zimbabwe.

Nkomo did not accept a separate personal deal. He insisted that Robert Mugabe be included because he had promised not to break up the Patriotic Front.

Mugabe rejected further negotiations largely because the proposed arrangement would have made him subordinate to Nkomo.
Nkomo kept his word not to negotiate a transfer of power without Mugabe. He refused to take power through a deal that excluded Mugabe.

Would Mugabe have returned the favour if the shoe had been on the other foot? I do not think so!
