Knowledge isn’t the most pressing thing we teach our students. In this digital age, knowledge will always be accessible. What we are experiencing in education is that one of the most important things we are teaching young people is how to live in community. Humans are social
Trump’s ‘Deportation Priority’ order prioritizes targeting workplaces, hospitals, school pick-up, or people who call emergency services rather than focusing on arresting & detaining dangerous criminals.
Impacts: Labor shortages in critical sectors & preventable deaths (6/11)
I get asked: where should education investments be, if not voucher schemes and subsidies?
Short A) local communities.
Longer A) GYO teacher pipelines, tutoring, school meals and wellness, early child ed, school infrastructure and tech, college & non-college pathways and more.
@tltown2019 Follow the money. The real reason is privatization. If they can monetize education then the billions of dollars going to educate our children go into the pockets of the billionaires supporting school choice.
There are five magic words every educator or person working with kids needs to know. “It’s okay, I’m not mad.” They don’t do a lot for the kid who is escaped in front of you but they magically remind you that you are still in control. #edutwitter
When we teach our children that they must follow any rule an adult puts in place, no matter what, we make them vulnerable. When we teach them that they have no real voice, we make them vulnerable. When we tell them them have no right to ask why, or to explain themselves, we make them vulnerable.
We might think that we are keeping them safe, that we are putting boundaries in place, but, particularly as they get older, obedience without thought makes them vulnerable.
Not all adults have their interests at heart, even those in authority over them. A child who has been taught that adults always know best is convenient for those around them. ‘Easy to manage’ and biddable. Instant obedience can be trained, and makes an institution run smoothly. Children learn that there’s no point in disagreeing.
But children who have learnt to do what they are told, no matter what, are easier to exploit. Children who have not been allowed to question adults won’t suddenly start when things aren’t right.
As one young person said to me ‘I didn’t think I could say no’. When we take away agency from children, we make them vulnerable.
Saying No is important, and if we don’t show them that they can, how will they ever know?
@DougDucey Is that because these schools were huge doners to your campaign? Nice when the legislation you are pushing creates kickbacks for your buddies.
@deb_fillman @Beanie0597 There is no free market in school choice only a grift of public money by the rich and corporations beholding to profits and shareholders.
@Beanie0597 This has nothing to do with school choice. This is about providing access to free and appropriate public education which is the right of every student. If the school doesn’t provide transportation they are obligated to make an alternative bearly free. Apples and oranges.
The medical model of MTSS assumes something is wrong with a kid. What if we thought of kids more like an ingredient we are cooking with. Nothing is wrong with the kid, some are just spicier than others. A good teacher will know how to bring out the best in each learner.
@EvilHatesTruth@Beanie0597 Which positions exactly are “fluff” what would be the benefit of cutting one or two of them? Admin salaries equal about 1.5 teacher salaries. What would that do spread out over 10,000 students at the loss of the support for teachers that administrator provides.
@Beanie0597 On average Admin account for about 5% of a districts budget while teacher salaries and benefits account for 50-55%. Ten times the administrative cost. Seems pretty proportional to me. What would the educational benefit be for each student if you cut one or two of them?
@missaustermann@MrDanielBuck I feel you have mixed up discipline with punishment. Punishment doesn’t teach. Discipline does. You aren’t teaching them replacement behaviors by excluding them. You are teaching them they aren’t wanted.
with adults and peers at school. This is where the students apply labels to themselves like “smart,” “Athletic,” “trouble maker,” “class clown.” They will do the job of labeling themselves based on their interactions with us. They don’t need our help. As educators,
Creatures. People will always find their people. Others who are like them and have similar lived experiences. In schools we are given the opportunity to interact with children at their most moldable moments. How they perceive themselves is affected through their interactions
