Nidhi Tewari: From UPSC Rank 96 to PM Modi’s Private Secretary

Nidhi Tewari is a 2014-batch Indian Foreign Service officer who now serves as Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Her journey to the Prime Minister’s Office has been steady and notable. She secured AIR 96 in the 2013 UPSC Civil Services Examination and joined the IFS.

Before entering the foreign service, Tewari worked as an Assistant Commissioner in Uttar Pradesh. She later served in the Ministry of External Affairs, where she handled important assignments, including work related to disarmament and international security.

In November 2022, she joined the Prime Minister’s Office as an Under Secretary. Within a few months, she was promoted to Deputy Secretary in January 2023.

Her work in the PMO included the foreign and security affairs desk. She was also involved in important work during India’s G20 presidency.

In 2025, Tewari was appointed Private Secretary to Prime Minister Modi. The post puts her close to the Prime Minister and involves handling important and sensitive matters.

Tewari’s career is also notable for her connection with Varanasi. She is from Mehmurganj in Varanasi and had earlier served there as an Assistant Commissioner.

From securing rank 96 in the UPSC examination to working at the heart of the PMO, Nidhi Tewari’s journey reflects a steady rise through some of the most important assignments in government.
