When I started on Doom, John Romero told me about the new rule he'd instigated. In hindsight, he didn't like the fact that the only way to find secrets in Wolfenstein was to run around the map bumping into every single wall to see if it moved. Yuck.

So in Doom, he said we always needed to provide a hint. Perhaps an offset texture, a change in light intensity. Something. Always a hint. One of the hints I'm most proud of is the one for E3M2. Look below. See the arrow just at the base of the pinky? It's only visible on map view, and points right towards a secret door.
