Breaking | Serious Deterioration in the Health of Kamal Adwan Hospital Director

The Physicians for Human Rights Association revealed on Thursday a severe deterioration in the condition of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, who has been held in Israel since December 2024. In an urgent statement, the association reported that Dr. Abu Safiya has been subjected to violence and mistreatment, has lost around 25 kilograms of weight, and is suffering from scabies without receiving any medical treatment, all while facing a complete absence of legal proceedings.

According to lawyer Nasser Odeh, who visited Ofer Prison, Abu Safiya has not been brought before a judge since March, has not undergone any interrogation, and has not been informed of the reasons for his detention. He described harsh and dangerous detention conditions, including severe food shortages, repeated assaults by prison guards, deprivation of clean clothing and medical care, and neglect of his requests for specialized examinations related to his pre-existing heart problems.

The association stressed that Abu Safiya’s case reflects systematic violations against Palestinian medical staff, noting that Israel is holding more than 100 doctors and nurses from Gaza in what it described as “illegal and inhumane conditions,” without charges or trial.

For his part, Naji Abbas, head of the prisoners’ department in the association, emphasized that what is happening constitutes “a moral and legal crime,” calling for the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya and all detained medical staff, and urging the international community to intervene urgently to stop these violations.
