Judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC), 2003–2008.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, 2008–2014.

Ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), from 2019, in proceedings concerning the genocide case brought by The Gambia against Myanmar.

Chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, 2021–2025
