How to Get Your TIN (TAX IDENTIFICATION NUMBER) in Nigeria (Step by Step)

Yesterday, I advised us on how to register our LLC. Today, it’s about TIN. Your Tax Identification Number (TIN) is now compulsory in Nigeria. You need it for banking, contracts, company registration, government payments, grants, loans, and the new tax compliance regime.

What a TIN Is

A TIN is a unique number issued by the government through the Federal Inland Revenue Service for tax identification.

One company, one TIN.

How Individuals(person) Get Their TIN (FREE)

You do not need to pay anyone.

Option 1: Online (Fastest)
- Visit the official Joint Tax Board TIN portal
- Choose Individual Registration
- Fill in your details
- Full name
- Phone number
- Email
- Date of birth
- Valid ID (NIN, Voters Card, or Driver’s License)
- Submit
- Your TIN is generated and sent to your email or phone

Option 2: Physical Office
- Visit the nearest FIRS tax office
- Ask for TIN registration
- Fill the form
- Present valid ID
- Your TIN is issued

How Businesses and Companies Get Their TIN

If you registered a business name or LLC with CAC:

- Your TIN is often auto-generated after CAC registration

If not visit FIRS office with:
# CAC Certificate
# CAC Status Report
# Director or Owner’s ID
# FIRS will generate it for you

Again, no payment required.

Important Truth You Guys Should Know

Anyone charging you money just to “generate TIN” is scamming you.

You only pay if someone is helping you with full CAC registration or consultancy, not TIN itself.
