Don't You Know Me
Every time
You ask me why,
A beat of my heart
Closes its door for you.
Don't you know me?
Don't you remember,
I am that same woman
With just a plain way
To love, and love more?

A verse from Sappho mourns old glory
It must have been the book I read last night
It must have been because I still miss you
Perhaps the spoon of summer
A taste of raspberries on tongues
The languages of the nature lives in me
The second coming lives next door
The day I understood I fought bed sheets for nothing
I ran to die on grass and to become a piece of wood
I should be sleeping instead of writing.
Coffee cup’s empty,
The night has faded away again,
Window’s bright with a sun whose face
I don’t recall,
& that woman, that woman,
Why does she hold me like this,
Why wouldn’t she leave me.
She sits there on her bed
With her bare feet up,
A silver shine in her eyes
& a song called anyhow on her lips,
Tapping in time
To the whispering wind outside
& the lonesome whistle
Of a distant train somewhere
Down the line,
Maybe she’s mistaken me
For another dream,
Another poet,
& right when I forget
That I am not Shakespeare
She lsays something that means forever,
Which is long ago & far away,
She touches me with her American fire,
Which is hotter than coffee,
Hotter than September,
& just when I think I love her,
I remember –
She only uses me for sex & poetry.
