Through the number talk, students discuss how they see the problem and their strategy for solving it. This can bring to light a strategy that their peers had not realized.

There are many ways that students can be strong in math without instant recall. The strongest students that are able to solve the most difficult problems may struggle with math facts

This only hurts students because they feel they will not do well because they have not memorized their facts.
