Those planning Hasina’s return should take a look at the recent Doppler Opinion Research and @IRIglobal polls. Both show general satisfaction with the government and parliamentary opposition. Anyone who thinks Bangladeshis are nostalgic for the Awami League is delusional.

Momentous achievement for Bangladesh Cricket, and the people of Bangladesh. Surely they’re deserving of their flowers and just recognition now from those from whom it has previously been too sparse. Many contributors, Mehidy, Tanzid etc. But Hasan Mahmud in particular has been a very good line bowler for several years now when fully healthy, and possesses a lovely efficient, upright action. Indians who are concerned about Bangladesh’s warming relationship with Pakistan need only look in the mirror and realize they have nobody to blame but themselves for the shifting regional geopolitics.

India’s original sin was to blindly support and enable Hasina’s autocratic and kleptocratic rule in exchange for favorable treatment on bilateral issues. It was inevitable that the people of Bangladesh would eventually rise up, leading to an anti-Indian backlash.

India could have minimized the damage post-Hasina by distancing themselves from her regime and embracing efforts to build Bangladesh 2.0. This is the approach China has successfully taken.

Instead, India doubled down by welcoming Hasina and her henchmen and providing them a platform to destabilize Bangladesh while unleashing an unrelenting disinformation campaign against the country and those who led the July Revolution. This March of Folly has directly led to the current nadir in relations.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has been adept in reaching out to Bangladesh and building a new relationship at all levels. The idea that 1971 would prove an insurmountable barrier to closer ties has been proven wrong. The new generation in particular appears interested in engaging with Pakistan.

No doubt India is planning a charm offensive after the February election to influence the next elected government. A big question will be how much popular support there will be in Bangladesh for a reset with India. Another impediment to closer ties will likely be India’s own domestic chauvinistic policies.

Not a very balanced piece here by @AP. It whitewashes the serious charges against Hasina and her supporters and lets them pose as victims. AP should have given equal time to the victims of Hasina’s brutal kleptocratic dictatorship in Bangladesh rather than give her notorious son a megaphone.

With the July Charter signed and with public anxiety caused by the recent string of fires, now would be a good time for @ChiefAdviserGoB to sit with leaders of the political parties, business community, and civil society to chart the path forward to the February elections.

With limited time remaining, the IG needs to focus its efforts on the highest priority items that need to be dealt with before the elections. At the same time, all the stakeholders in the July Revolution should commit to ensuring a smooth transition to the next elected government, regardless of the outcome.

The unity of the July Coalition is its greatest strength and the best antidote to the efforts by remnants of the former regime and their supporters to cause chaos.

Message from Imran Khan’s ex wife @Jemima_Khan

“In the last few weeks there have been serious and concerning developments regarding my sons’ father, Imran Khan’s treatment in prison. The Pakistan authorities have stopped all visits to him by his family and his lawyers. They have also postponed all court hearings. In addition to cutting off in- person visits, and in defiance of a court order, his weekly calls to his sons, Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, who are British and who live in London, were stopped on 10th September. We have received reports that the authorities have now turned off the lights and electricity in his cell and he is no longer allowed to leave his cell at any time. The jail cook has been sent on leave. He is now completely isolated, in solitary confinement, literally in the dark, with no contact with the outside world. His lawyers are concerned about his safety and well-being.

These actions come in the context of ongoing targeting of Imran’s family, as well as his party (PTI) members and supporters in an attempt to silence them and all political opposition in Pakistan. Imran’s nephew, Hassan Niazi, a civilian, has been detained in military custody since August 2023. More recently, Imran Khan’s sisters, Uzma and Aleema Khan, who have continued to speak out on his behalf, have also been arrested as they made their way peacefully to a demonstration and they are currently being held in jail, despite there being no proper or lawful basis for their imprisonment.

In June this year the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that Imran is unlawfully and arbitrarily detained and called for his immediate release.

 As a matter of urgency , we are calling for Imran Khan’s release, and for the release of his sisters and nephew as well as for his sons’ contact with their father to be re-established, so that they may have assurance first-hand that he is well and not being mistreated.”
