In the midst of war, one must keep up one's standards. In this instance, Mary Borden's shopping list included a suspender belt, skin tonic, moisturiser and face powder.

I had a fantastic day at #NWiMS @modernistudies yesterday, presenting on Experience and Expression in 'The Forbidden Zone' and (hopefully) spreading the word about the incredible Mary Borden. Wonderful to meet so many like-minded people and engage in fascinating conversations 🩵

Mary Borden's fascinating and terrible insight into life for nursing staff on the front line in 1917, hidden in the archives at Churchill College, Cambridge:

'The wounded that have come in today are beyond all description - it is strange that we have been able to save any'.
