In Britain, a lot of elites don’t really “get” Germany.

Having married a German and visiting constantly, I can tell you for absolute certainty - they want to dominate Europe.

They’ve been a problem since day one (1870), launching all sorts of expansionist wars. They’ve create all sorts of vile ideologies (Marxism, Nazism, modern Greenism) which have domination of the individual at the heart.

They are completely baffled when presented with an argument that say, they shouldn’t set Greece’s economic policy, are determine how French goods are exported. As far as they’re concerned, if he’s in Europe, it’s theirs.

When they say “we need you” they mean “we want to dominate you” or, “we want to use you to dominate the others - our little Anglo cousins ho ho! You’re so cute!”

The EU is simply a tool to achieve that. Nothing more.

There's a reason Burnham is fixated on low impact gimmicks and trivialities. He's stalling and playing for time because he doesn't have a plan. He doesn't know what he wants to achieve, has no idea what's politically possible, and doesn't know what's left in the kitty. He is totally unprepared and has his people scrabbling around in the background like maniacs to come up with an agenda in time for September. He's fairly cautious about making promises he can't deliver on, so sticks to things like banning disposable barbecues.

I do believe, though, that he has good intentions. I genuinely think he wants to ease the cost of living crisis. He just won't succeed because leftists don't have the intellectual architecture to solve these problems. The redistributive brain has no concept of what creates wealth. If there is inequality it's because the state isn't intervening enough. On that basis, all he can do is meddle and make things worse - breaking the few things that still work.

It won't take very long for Burnham to become a lame duck PM. Anything he might do that would be popular will likely be quashed by his own backbenchers, while the Treasury will no doubt put the dampeners on his other ambitions. On that basis, all he has left is more unpopular tinkering, much like Starmer's administration. The only way they can do anything they want to do is to deny economic gravity and plunge us deeper into the hole. An obstructive civil service might be the only thing standing between us an bankruptcy.

There is, however, a lesson here for the right. This is what happens when you come into office without policies and a plan. The order of execution is as important as what you intend to do, recognising especially that you have limited political capital and only a short time to show you mean business.

I believe in the free market. But we never should have privatized the water companies. The free market works when there is competition. You cannot have competition when a company is granted a legal monopoly. Then to make things worse you privatize the profits but make public the losses. Water companies should be renationalized.
