Fascinating that Starmer is widely regarded as doomed when so many key metrics are going his way: channel crossings, migration more generally, NHS waiting lists, and today’s inflation numbers
Top tip from someone who helped develop a Driving Theory Test app:
The number inside your car needs to be equal to, or lower than, the one displayed on the massive sign visible through the window.
@DavidLammy This is disingenuous. There is no evidence at all that removing the right to jury trial will make any meaningful dent in the backlog.
Also, “victims first” is petty politicking that should be beneath you. Justice means justice for all. Not every accused person is guilty.
Former Criminal Solicitor and Barrister, KT MP, is willing to vote against the whip on the curtailment of juries. And he’s absolutely right to do so. Politicians who care about our criminal justice system should do the same.
How the Daily Mail has responded to a Budget that will slightly raise wages for young people, vs how they responded to a Budget that almost crashed the entire economy
I actually think we should have more jury trials. Parking tickets. Overdue library books. Supermarket trolley parking infractions. Power to the people.
My favourite part of the criminal justice system is when the prosecuting authorities get 2 years to charge, the court gets 2 years to find a courtroom - but the defence get 28 days to serve a defence statement.
Just to be clear. To believe Lucy Connolly's defenders you have to also believe the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, the initial prosecution barrister, the initial defence barrister, the initial judge and three individual appeal court judges were all acting under direct orders from Keir Starmer.
People who consistently bang on about threats to our freedoms, then argue we should have politicians deciding guilt or innocence - rather than juries, judges and courts - are off their heads.
