Science of learning TL;DR
➡️ Remembering stuff is good.
➡️ To think, you need stuff to think with.
➡️ If you have stuff in your long-term memory you can think about stuff much more deeply.
➡️ Retrieving stuff from your long-term memory helps it stay there.
➡️ Retrieval doesn’t just reveal memory; it reshapes it.
➡️ Spacing out retrieval helps you remember it even better.
➡️ Most skills are probably domain specific and don’t transfer.
➡️ Learning to read is much harder than learning to talk.
➡️ Working memory is the arena where thinking occurs but you can only hold 3-5 items of new stuff at once.
➡️ You can get around the previous point by having stuff in your long-term memory.
➡️ Just because you’re engaged, doesn’t mean you’re learning anything.
➡️ Learning stuff can feel like you’re not learning anything at all and vice versa.
➡️ Accomplishing stuff often leads to motivation not the other way round.
➡️ Discovery learning is not a good way to discover stuff.
➡️ Plan teaching to help kids remember things so they can understand more, make more connections and think deeply about stuff later on.

Mini whiteboards (MWB) are an absolute essential for all classrooms. Here’s why:
- All-student responses
- Immediate corrective feedback
- Gradual release tasks as a whole class
- Check for understanding & formative assessment
- Student self-editing
- Engagement norms
Watching a video of a classroom where the teacher is doing retrieval practice & so many students dying to engage. My colleague Jen: "Investing in knowledge is fun; kids LIKE knowing things."

I must have heard, “Get rid of it shouted several hundred times at kids this morning, then clapped by parents/coaches when they boot it off the pitch. They do realise they are rewarding giving possession to the other team with praise?!
Flip it to, “Stay on the ball” instead!
🙂What a Tuesday night Treat!! 🙂

The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.
Fantastic start to one of the first FA National Futsal Courses in Loughborough yesterday. A very engaging and insightful day. Looking forward to the second day next month! 😀👊
Insightful article. Let's also consider how many more touches of a ball and 'involvement' each individual can have in a smaller-sided game compared to a larger format. 🤔
