1/ I built a personal app to solve a problem we all have:

You see an amazing movie clip online, but forget it when it's time to watch.
You then spend an hour scrolling Netflix only to pick something boring and fall asleep.

This free app solves it 👇

Introducing Our Scholar of the Month: Samuel Alalade (@samalalade)

We are excited to introduce our Scholar of the Month, Samuel Alalade, who is currently pursuing his PhD at Texas Tech University, USA.

Undergraduate Institution and Year of Graduation (Course)
BSc in Civil Engineering, Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, 2019

Did you write the GRE and TOEFL?
I took the GRE and IELTS in 2021. However, this was after I had already submitted my GKS application, so they were not used for that. They proved useful later in 2024 during my PhD application to the United States.

What's your CGPA (4.0/5.0)?
4.61/5.00

Were you admitted to an MSc or PhD program? If so, at which university?
I was admitted to an MSc under the Global Korean Scholarship, and am currently pursuing my PhD at Texas Tech University after securing the Distinguished Graduate Student Assistantship (DGSA) from the University.

What is the worth of your scholarship in USD?
The GKS is a fully funded scholarship covering monthly allowance, research allowance, settlement allowance, Korean proficiency grants, medical insurance, and more — amounting to approximately 16,560,000 KRW per year (about $12,000–$13,000 USD/year in stipends), plus full tuition coverage. The DGSA at Texas Tech University awards $25,000 per year plus tuition and fee waivers, totaling approximately $42,000/year.

How many applications did you submit before securing your current scholarship?
For my master's degree, I submitted over 50 applications across nearly every continent, alongside even more cold emails. My PhD process was much smoother — I received fully funded offers from both of the applications I submitted.

How many publications do you have?
At the time of my master's application, I had no journal publications, but I included a conference paper which strengthened my profile.

Did you secure a supervisor before applying for admission?
For my master's, I contacted a professor who eventually became my mentor at Gangneung-Wonju National University. For my PhD, I met my current professor at a conference and secured his intent to supervise me before applying. I now work as a researcher in his prestigious lab.

What do you believe made your application competitive?
Fully funded offers are exceptionally competitive. In 2021, I was one of only 12 scholars selected from thousands of brilliant Nigerian applicants.

How did Scholarships Cafe contribute to your scholarship journey?
I was introduced to the GKS program directly by Dr. Olumuyiwa Igbalajobi, the founder of Scholarships Cafe, as far back as 2019. I applied to the GKS in both 2020 and 2021. He has been a pivotal figure in my journey, providing mentorship and advice that continues to influence my career today. I am deeply grateful to Scholarships Cafe.

What advice would you give to prospective scholars? Do not limit yourself. Apply to as many schools and scholarships as possible. You never know which door will open until you knock!
Congratulations, Samuel!

Masters is forgivable, but self-funding a PhD should not be normal.
