Hot take: influencers don't really do anything to grow the sport.

Influencers at the US Open are really creating one off flaky fans that will boost ticket sales during this two week window, until those people find the next new shiny object to latch onto that said influencer told them is hot i.e. a new pop up that they urgently feel the need to stand three hours in line for.

I don't think tennis needs more "influencers". What they really need is real recurring revenue from fans that are gonna watch every single tournament, from fans that will teach their kids how to play the sport, or they themselves have played. It really starts from the beginning, and a few extra "influencers" who probably have nothing to do with tennis besides the end of August, who don't create anything of substance for tennis, are not gonna do much.

But what these people do is line the pockets of the US Open, which is great for them. I can't complain about business. The US Open makes money from New Yorkers that want to signal to society that they went to the US Open. That's why the honey deuce is $23. Real tennis fans, which Coco Gauff is talking about, are created from a completely different strategy, in my opinion.

But as of now, that's in direct contention with the US Open's goals. So why would they spend the time to do anything about it?

For sure, there might be some people that go to the US Open and feel inspired to play the sport or watch another tournament or some kids that see their favorite tennis player and take the game more seriously. But that's an ideal world that we are probably not living in right now. If you turn on the TV, it's less kids in the seats and more 35 yr old bankers on a date night. It's more signaling than inspiration.

And so I really wonder if this is actually doing anything to grow the sport or grow the US Open. Both need to happen, but let's actually be serious with what is being prioritized.

“I think it’s great to have a different demographic to the sport. I have no problem with influencers. I’ve met some of them and follow some of them online. Luckily the ones I do follow online do follow the etiquette and know tennis pretty well. Any venue you come to, you have to follow the etiquette towards it. I definitely think, maybe on some of the brands too, maybe to have a sign plastered in the suite.. sometimes it’s their first tennis match and they don’t know. They’ve probably been to basketball games before. I definitely think no flash photography. Try not to talk too loud. Ashe is a very loud court so I’m used to it. Definitely not like mouthing TikTok’s and stuff in the middle of a point 😂. It’s not just for the players but for the viewing experience, for those around. I think it’s cool to have a new demographic and I think it helps grow the sport. But like with anything, any venue you go to, like if you’re being invited to a red carpet, you wouldn’t show up in jeans. I think it’s just follow the etiquette of the sport. That’s all.”

After setting up and using Grok Bot, my immediate thought was the problem of having more than one thing to do with a single bot.

Might seem like a small and minuscule problem, but if I have to wait for the bot to finish its work before I give it another thing to do, it is a fundamental limitation in the capability of what I can get done. Compared to Claude or Codex I just open up the folder/project and create a new chat thread.

It doesn't look as elegant and aesthetically pleasing as Grok Bot.

But Claude Code or Codex lets me work on multiple agents in parallel and keep track of them basically like a de facto project management system.

However, I do think the simplicity of Grok Bot has helped my brain organize work into sections and to think about how work should get delegated and lifted the starting trouble of doing things.

And it’s hard not to realize that the simplicity and aesthetics of using something can actually make you want to use it more which in turn makes it a worthwhile tool to use.
