The Serbian Diaspora Is Dying
The student uprising united the Serbian diaspora in a way I have never witnessed before. It sparked organized protests across cities and towns where Serbian communities live abroad. In many places, the turnout was even larger—and the demonstrations lasted longer—than those held during the 1999 NATO bombing. It was an extraordinary display of coordination across the diaspora, a community that has historically struggled to unite around common causes, as the divisions of the 1990s demonstrated.
One thing, however, stood out to me. Although the movement in Serbia is overwhelmingly student-led, with young people at its core, the diaspora protests looked very different. The vast majority of those in attendance were from older generations, while relatively few young people participated. That contrast was impossible to ignore and was something I, along with many others who attended and helped organize the protests, repeatedly observed.
I believe the most likely explanation is one that should worry supporters of President Vučić just as much as those who oppose him. The issue is not that Vučić has more support among young people in the diaspora. It is that many of them no longer feel connected enough to Serbia to engage in its politics at all. With millions of Serbs now living abroad, this is not just a political problem—it is an existential threat to the long-term survival of our people as a connected national community.
History suggests that immigrant communities which are neither a visible minority nor held together by strong religious or cultural institutions often assimilate within a few generations. What we may be seeing today is the children of the 1990s wave of Serbian immigration reaching that point. Unless the diaspora is given meaningful reasons to stay connected, Jovan will become "John," Katarina will become "Catherine," and Serbia will lose another generation to assimilation.
This should concern every Serb, regardless of politics. Remittances from the diaspora amount to roughly 8% of Serbia's GDP each year, and the country is already facing a severe demographic crisis. I once believed that COVID might encourage more people to return or reconnect. Instead, that opportunity appears to have been missed. Unless there is a major change in how Serbia engages its diaspora, we will watch one of our country's greatest strengths quickly disappear.

01.11.2024 will be remembered as the day when corruption claimed sixteen innocent lives, a wound carved into the heart of Novi Sad that Serbia will never forget.
We are proud to have donated $100,000 to the families affected by the tragedy and to have stood with the students striving for a better future, but we are disheartened that, one year later, this remains the largest assistance they have received and that no one has been found criminally responsible.
Their names, their lives, and their dreams must not fade into silence. Justice delayed is justice denied, and until those responsible are held accountable, the wounds of that day cannot begin to heal.

What all Serbs must know: Rio Tinto will make €4 billion in profits in the first ten years from the Jadar mine project. In contrast, mining licenses will bring just €300 million to the Serbian state, with only €25 million of that going to the municipality of Loznica, whose ecological landscape is being destroyed. Resist this occupation and exploitation by any means.
