After nearly five years of advocacy by the @Rename_Taney Coalition, @CouncilmemberKJ with @PHLCouncil and extensive community debate, we are proud to announce a street renaming to replace the name of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, infamous for the 1857 Dred Scott decision that denied citizenship to African Americans, with Caroline LeCount, a Philadelphia Civil Rights pioneer and educator. 

Caroline LeCount was the first black woman to pass Philadelphia’s teaching exam and worked as a trailblazing principal in the late 19th Century, working alongside her partner Octavius Catto in the fight for desegregation and equality in education and public services. 

I am proud to commemorate the life, legacy, and contributions of Caroline LeCount to our great City through this historic street renaming.
