Pro-Palestinian candidate unseats AIPAC veteran in Colorado Primaries
——
Pro-Palestinian 29-year-old Ethiopian immigrant Melat Kiros unseated 30-year veteran incumbent Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st congressional district.
Kiros, a lawyer and PhD student running as a Democratic Socialist, was declared the projected winner on 30 June.
Backed by Senator Bernie Sanders, her victory marks a significant shift away from establishment politics in the deep-blue district of Denver.
Kiros centered her campaign on progressive issues and an outspoken critique of Israel, reflecting a broader trend of pro-Palestine candidates winning primaries across the US.
During her victory speech, she highlighted her personal history of being fired from a multinational law firm in 2023 for defending students' rights to protest the genocide in Gaza.
In contrast, DeGette's long tenure was noted for receiving over $1.6 million from the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC.
The Democratic National Committee eventually acknowledged Kiros' victory, describing her as a "fierce champion" for healthcare, affordable housing, and workers' rights. Following this landmark win, Kiros is now almost certain to secure a seat in the House of Representatives during the November midterm elections.
Her success aligns with a rising wave of younger progressive lawmakers who are increasingly defining the next generation of the Democratic Party.
