It’s obviously a complicated issue. Some see unfettered access to the internet as the future. However. The point is the damage that it has on young, immature minds, is obvious, so we need to apply laws the same way we understand we need to limit access to alcohol, smoking or driving etc. Personally I’d make owning a smart phone under 16 illegal. So kids can have phones for convenience & safety but not unlimited uncontrolled internet access. It’s the addiction caused by continuous access with unethical algorithms set to deliberately do this that’s wrong. The truth is (& we must deal in truth & evidence) kids have better physical, but especially mental health without smart phones. If we know this, and we do, we must do something. But it must be across all social media if that’s the way we go. No government can pick & choose who ‘they’ see fit to ban!
Just had a fabulous visit to St. Philip’s primary school in Bath with their fab head Jo, where they’ve had the most successful three weeks renting a pool, swim teacher & lifeguard to get 150 swim lessons rather than their usual 10. Intensive, fun swimming lessons getting ALL of their kids swimming. I’m passionate about making sure our children have this life saving skill. And the only place we can catch them is at school. 50% of children can’t swim the target of 25m by 11. This must change. Well done St. Philips, kids, parents & staff.
@JuliaHB1@EruditeElf Unfortunately, wealth/affordability does not = nutritional meals. That said, school meal provision still needs to improvement. More education and variety alongside.
Taking your bra off at the end of the day feels great.
So does getting your breast screening sorted. It can detect cancer before you can feel it. Or more likely, put your mind at rest.
So when you're invited, save the date. It could save your life.

Gareth Southagte, "Today, young people are bombarded by information at all times of the day"
"From a device that fits neatly into the palm of their hand and updates by the second"
"They're targeted with images of the perfect body, the perfect career, and the perfect life"
"Beautifully crafted highlights reel where success appears to be instant and effortless"
"How can this make them feel good about themselves?"
"When I was growing up the only people I had to compare myself to were the other kids on my street, school and football team"
"I was a bit of an idiot. There were some idiots over there. I realised nobody was perfect"
"Now you can find yourself mocked, bullied or ridiculed if it appears you don't conform to whatever appears to be the latest trend of the day"
"Believe me, I should know. As hardened as I am to opinions and criticisms there's no way I was going to trawl through social media last summer and read a load of abuse"
"It wouldn't have helped me in any way to do my job. So I had to shut myself off from it as far as I could"
"And it seems that young people themselves actually recognise this problem"
"A poll of 16-24 year olds found that the majority believe that social media has become more toxic and addictive in the past five years"
"Negatively impacting their mental health, sleep, attention span, and ability to work or study"
"I'm sure this comes as no surprise to any parent who asks their child on a daily basis to put their phones away"
"The solution is complex is because bad habits have been formed. But ignoring the negative impact of social media on our young people is not an option"
Just watch #Adolescence to see how our youth minds are being shaped. Let's ban social media to under 16's, educate parents/children who are found to be in breach & stop people being exploited as cheap advertising for these companies under guise of money/fame making 'influencer'
This shook me. @GarethSouthgate hits the nail on the head.
Not just affecting men.
It’s consumerism, capitalism, a wafer thing superficial culture which says looks, fame and money are the only things that matters.
Things are broken. We need radical change in almost every area.
@DrSdeG Same with #figureskating.Rinks only available to elite/competitive skaters at silly o'clock.4.15am b4 school & weekends are a regular occurrence, then full day at school/homework & early bed.Poor support in UK for our potential athletes to compete with their international peers.
