Over the past few days, I’ve been thinking: how can I develop better instincts and understand more about building a business?

I’ve broken it down into two things:

1.Learn why companies stand out.

Some startups stand out with brand-new ideas, especially now with AI. But most of the time, they improve what’s already out there by offering better prices, better solutions, a better user experience, and so on.

@builtwithrubel Yes — I’m building a SaaS, so I want to talk to as many people as I can.

I’ll reply to people even if there’s only a 0.01% chance they’ll get back to me. I believe that, eventually, I can find 100 potential testers.

i’ve noticed something with founders:

they need a lot of feedback to get better.

but most founders don’t get enough of it.

investors ignore them.
people are too busy to respond.
customers don’t always tell them what they really think.

sometimes the biggest help you can give a founder is simply honest feedback.

I’m struggling with one of the most important parts of building a product:

Talking to potential customers.

So I’m trying something simple.

I’ve sent 100+ cold messages to:
• Small business owners in different industries
• People on Reddit & Facebook
• People from Hong Kong (my home city), hoping that common ground might make them more willing to share feedback
I’m going to keep doing this for 7 days and see what happens.
Here’s the message I’m sending:
“Hi [Name],

I’m Sam. I’m doing some research to better understand the day-to-day challenges faced by sole traders and small business owners in [industry].

Thinking back over the last month, was there a particular task or situation at work that you found especially frustrating or that took more time than you felt it should?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. Thanks!”

Let’s see how many people reply after 7 days.

1.5 years ago, I left my 9–5 job after 14 years in corporate.

Since then:
❌ 3 MVPs failed
❌ $0 monthly income
❌ ~$200/month tool costs

Still, the learning I gained and the audience I built are priceless.

Not there yet. Not going back.
