20 years ago almost exactly to the day me, J Frayne and a tiny team won the North East referendum. We had almost no money. My girlfriend answered the phone. My dad did accounts. My uncle Phil - more famous for double or quits at KLUTE nightclub [watch the Jane Fonda movie], the best in Europe outside Moscow - drove the legendary elephant.
How did we win?
We argued that the political-bureaucratic-media elites in London were delusional & pathological - vote No to tell them so.
Our slogan: POLITICIANS TALK, WE PAY
We started off 30 points behind. We won 80-20. Nobody wins significant elections by that much.
Westminster totally ignored the result.
An MP asked me to talk to MPs about why it happened.
I said ok and went.
One MP turned up. He’d come to the wrong room, apologised and left.
We did the campaign partly as a training exercise. A decade later we did Brexit and SW1 was stunned.
These three facts are the core of politics in the last 20 years.
1/ The *rational* collapse of voters’ trust in, and the calibre & performance of, political-bureaucratic-media elites.
2/ The total lack of self awareness of these elites to face the collapse in their quality and why voters don’t trust them — no updating, always doubling down, now to the extent of screaming 'fascist' at more than half the voters because they think it's barbaric to let men beat up women in a boxing ring as 'women's sport'.
3/ The old media reinforces the blindness and uselessness of the political-bureaucratic elites and the latter orient their activity entirely to the former, NOT the voters or *reality* - a huge shift from when we were a serious country. (And objectively mad given the collapse of trust in and size of audiences for the old political media & politicians are theoretically rational actors trying to win elections.)
This triple whammy was central in the Brexit referendum where I replayed identical concepts and stunts from 2004.
And Trump.
And our 2019 victory.
And the covid and Ukraine shitshows.
And Trump 2.
The crucial lesson for all those who want change and keep voting for it?
The old regime will NOT learn however many disasters it suffers, it’s been defeated repeatedly, it’s had pandemics and wars on a scale outside living memory yet it ploughs on blind and mad and pathological. I thought it would change after Brexit. I was totally wrong. They doubled down. And they'll keep doubling down. Being humiliated by Trump again will not change them, at the New York Times or in SW1.

We’re going through the normal historical process of regime change & this is normally chaotic and violent.

If we want change we must *retire* these elites: no violence but no compromise.

Hopefully @elonmusk and network will show a new network in Britain how to capture and use power, then do what started to happen in 2019-20 but was destroyed by the rotten-to-its core Tory Party, which preferred to babble to journalists about each other instead of use power to improve the world...
