What we are seeing playing out militarily right now is not just a campaign against Iran but is also the testing ground for the next generation of American warfare. This is America’s first war against a conventional army in 23 years, since the invasion of Iraq and that matters.

The US military is using this war to employ and evaluate weapons systems that until now had never been used in combat. One example is the PrSM missile, which entered service just two years ago and has now reportedly been used operationally for the first time. With a range of roughly 600 km and high precision, it represents a new layer of long-range strike capability.

Another example was the sinking of an Iranian naval vessel in the Indian Ocean by a submarine-launched torpedo. The US has not destroyed an enemy ship with a torpedo since World War II. That alone shows the scale of what is unfolding.

But this is not only about battlefield experimentation. It is also about messaging and deterrence.

Look at how the Pentagon is communicating this war to the world. The videos being released are produced almost like movie trailers, complete with dramatic music and cinematic visuals. That is not accidental. It is strategic communication designed to demonstrate capability and project power.

And the audience is not just Iran.

These images and operations are also meant for Moscow and Beijing. Iran’s military is built heavily on Russian and Chinese technology and doctrine. By fighting and dismantling those systems in real time, the United States is learning how they perform in combat - and signaling to Russia and China how their equipment and methods fare against American power.

In other words, this war is about Iran. But it is also about something much bigger: preparing for the possibility of future conflicts with far more powerful adversaries.
