To answer this question asked by some: Yes, there is something to miss, and I miss it. I miss the times when peace wasn’t a rare commodity. I was in class 4 then. The day after Modi came to power, two of my classmates argued about religion. DB (a Hindu) smugly told SB (a Muslim): “How can you do dharam? You’re a Muslim. Muslims are bad. I’m happy Modi has come.” SB, a 9-year-old, couldn’t even muster a response.

That was just the beginning. Over time, such conversations grew louder and nastier. One of our teachers told us about a class 3 girl saying, “I shudder to think I breathe the same air as non-vegetarians.” Imagine being so brainwashed before even learning algebra.

So yes, I have memories, ones I wish I didn’t. In 2013, I was 8. In 2014, I was 9. That argument didn’t happen in 2013. Why? Because 2013 was UPA. That’s how a change in government seeps into playgrounds and classrooms, turning innocence into prejudice. Kids are curious, they observe everything, and such poison sticks. I miss a time when kids weren’t parroting hate they heard at home or on TV. However my friends did post 2014.

I didn’t grow politically conscious out of ambition, it was out of necessity. Injustices were everywhere: mob lynching, communal polarization, Judge Loya’s mysterious death, Asifa’s gang rape justifications. Yes, justifications. I entered politics in 2018 because staying silent wasn’t an option anymore.

And here’s another thing I miss. We used to have school assemblies about Unity in Diversity, how God has no religion, how secularism means tolerance. I was just 9, but guess what? Even I could understand that message. Today, schools wouldn’t dare do something so bold. Why? Fear of trolling. Imagine living in a world where teaching kids to coexist makes you a target.

After 2015, those assemblies stopped. The last one was in 2019, a quiet protest against CAA-NRC. And now? Muslim kids as young as 6 are told to “Go back to Pakistan,” mocked for eating biryani, and bullied by classmates. That didn’t happen in my school days. You know why? Because back then, being secular wasn’t a crime.

I miss that fraternity. I thank my stars I didn’t have to witness today’s hate-soaked playgrounds. You won’t understand this you can’t. You’ve traded humanity for bigotry, and it shows.
