In 2007, sitting across from Charlie Rose, Qatar's then-Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani made a warning that has echoed into 2026. Asked what he'd tell Washington about a possible strike on Iran's nuclear program, he predicted oil could leap from roughly $80 a barrel toward $120 or $150, dragging the global economy down with it. "What's going to happen to the world?" he asked.

Since the US and Israel launched their war on Iran in February 2026, that scenario has largely played out. Brent crude, which traded near pre-war levels earlier this month, jumped more than 3 percent after Washington struck Iran again in early July and revoked a sanctions waiver on Iranian oil, pushing prices to around $76-78 a barrel — the highest since late June.

Tehran responded with strikes on tankers and threats to choke off the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil and gas trade passes.

While prices haven't hit the $150 ceiling the Emir floated, analysts warn of prolonged volatility as fighting continues — a slower-motion version of the shock he foresaw nearly two decades ago.

Oman summened Iran's Ambassador on Sunday to hand him over a letter of protest following the Iranian strikes that targeted several sites in the Gulf country, the state's news agency reported on Sunday.

"The Sultanate of Oman summons the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to hand him a formal note of protest following the targeting of sites in the Governorates of Musandam and Al Wusta by unmanned aerial vehicles," said a statement carried by the Oman News Agency.

"Oman expresses its profound dismay at these irresponsible acts, and underscores the imperative of adhering to the provisions of state sovereignty, good neighbourliness, non-interference in internal affairs and respect for the established norms and moral principles that bind the relations between the two neighbouring countries and their peoples," reads the statement.

More than 600,000 people have signed a petition urging FIFA to end its lucrative partnership with Coca-Cola by 2030, a sponsorship that reportedly accounts for 2 percent of FIFA’s annual budget.

The campaign was launched by the Kick Big Soda Out of Sport platform and has received support from more than 100 health and climate organisations, including Greenpeace, Healthy Food America, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, and the World Obesity Federation.

“For decades, Coca-Cola has used the FIFA World Cup to push sweetened beverages to millions of fans — turning the world’s biggest game into one giant soda,” the campaign said. “Forty years ago, FIFA kicked tobacco out of sport. Big Soda should be next.”

In 2024, the platform launched a similar petition targeting the Paris Olympics, which received 255,000 signatures.

FIFA has not publicly responded to the petition so far.
