My personal opinion is that most if not all current AI Auditor services are some form of grift or scam, often accompanied with very deceptive marketing about amazing findings that were or would be duped to hell in public audit contests.

The only way to change my mind is for AI Auditor services to:

1) regularly find 80-90% of what a junior auditor can find, this way codebases can get efficient low-cost QA done prior to real audits. Such AI Auditor services should explicitly note that their services are QA/preparatory work prior to real audits; that they do not replace nor are equivalent to real audits

2) if they truly have some "intelligence", find the same (or ideally more) as the current "dumb" static analyzers but with drastically lower false positive rates. Even if they just wrap the static analyzers but use their "intelligence" to accurately filter out false positives, this would be a useful improvement

3) (holy grail) regularly find high-impact findings that no or few other auditors can find in public contests or bug bounties

Until one of these 3 criteria is achieved, AI Auditors are mostly useless and should not be relied upon for security by any serious protocols, regardless of what their marketing might claim. The security pipeline for serious protocols remains the same: multiple audits by top firms, public competitive audit & bug bounty post deployment.

That being said, the current AI Auditor services do have one valid use case - to enrich their teams and investors. AI Auditor grifts & scams are nothing new and have been very profitable for the people who run them; I present to you the chart of the OG AI Auditor from Jan 2023: "0x0 AI Smart Contract Auditor".

If you had invested $10,000 into the OG AI Auditor at the mid-range price in the first 5 weeks, today you'd have ~$1,600,000 and at the peak ~$9,000,000! Yet where are all the amazing audit contest wins, epic bug bounties received & stacked private audit reports of this AI Auditor over the last ~2.5 years? Nowhere to be found!🤣🤣🤣

So just because most if not all current AI Auditor services are scams and grifts, doesn't mean they won't be massively profitable especially for their early investors.

And it also doesn't mean that in the future an actually useful AI Auditor service won't emerge; I do believe 1) and 2) will be achieved in the future which will have an overall positive impact on the security outcomes of our industry.

If you are actively developing an AI Auditor service, my challenge to you is to develop 1) and 2) then conclusively prove it to the world - you'll make a ton of $ in a legitimate manner and genuinely help our industry.

But please don't pretend with your marketing that the AI "Auditor" service you offer provides the same or better security outcomes than the existing security pipeline used by top protocols consisting of multiple audits by top firms + public competitive audit, because it doesn't.

Your AI isn't catching what multiple top firms and competitive audits miss; if it was you'd have millions of dollars not from investor funding but from a fat stack of big $ contest wins & massive $ bug bounties.
