@MichaelSFuhrer@Thoughtfulnz Yes they did. Eyeballing the Economist's chart, Australia's surge in Dec 2022 is a major contributor to the divergence in the cumulative lines.
@MichaelSFuhrer@Thoughtfulnz I think that's not the whole story ... NZ then had almost a couple more months to vaccinate before the omicron wave. A lot of boosters went out in January 2022.
@MichaelSFuhrer@Thoughtfulnz Australia had a similar pattern, but cumulative covid deaths went net-positive in Jan 2022, a year before NZ https://t.co/pWmhfSWAKg
Western Australia's pattern looks a lot like New Zealand's, or even better (data not shown :-) )
@MichaelSFuhrer@Thoughtfulnz If that's so, maybe the fault is with the standardisation to WHO population - which is very young. It will (for example) give a huge weighting to the 2019 Christchurch mosque murders. @Thoughtfulnz have you tried standardising to Denmark or NZ's population?
Yesterday Auckland had more rain than the total amount it gets in many (43 of the last 60) summers!

Prime Minister @JacindaArdern has guided New Zealand through crises and seized opportunities by leading with foresight, integrity and empathy. Her country is better off because of her remarkable leadership—and the rest of us are too.
@DonMacAskill@Flickr Yes please! I've just moved to https://t.co/1t6BKxSBra, looking at PixelFed this weekend - but would be great to keep my photos in one well-run place

There's something kind of chastening about watching thousands of highly educated people discover that the USA lacks the labour standards enjoyed by the civilised world
Yesterday was my last day at Twitter: the entire Human Rights team has been cut from the company.
I am enormously proud of the work we did to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, to protect those at-risk in global conflicts & crises including Ethiopia,
COVID is killing thousands of Australians who would have otherwise lived, likely to be 20-30,000 by year's end. This fig shows that, after saving lives in 2020 (another story), once this line crossed the zero in late 2021, we were in ‘excess’ territory. 1/
@CrabbBrendan Noting that his graph Does Not represent excess mortality from Covid19
The shorter term reduction in deaths was driven by less CV events
The current increase is a combination of factors, including Covid19 related, but also the effects of Lockdowns & deferred healthcare.
@Thoughtfulnz Kia ora, great charts. How much work would it be to sort the geographically instead of alphabetically? It would be great to see whether neighbouring districts are correlated
