My non-data-backed political analysis:

The two major parties and their allies probably each have around 40% solid support and another 5% soft support. That core 40% will vote for their side no matter what happens. The additional 5% can usually be retained without much difficulty.

So in reality, elections are often decided by the remaining 10%.

And that 10% is different from the hardcore supporters on either side.

They care more about values and principles than party loyalty. They care about equality, anti-corruption, accountability, separation of powers, rule of law and good governance.

The mistake many ruling parties make is judging all their actions based on what their own 40% supporters think. That is not a winning strategy.

Because no matter what you do, the core 40% is likely to stay with you anyway.

The real political battle is always about the 10%.
