The racist double standards are outrageous. Many Canadian Jewish organizations provide huge sums of (taxpayer subsidized) assistance to a genocidal military, yet a Palestinian Canadian activist is charged with “terrorism” for purportedly verbalizing support for resistance to occupation & genocide.

In a major escalation of the Toronto Police Service’s anti-Palestinian repression, the TPS has turned to Canada’s anti-Palestinian, civil-liberties-violating, post-9/11 terror law to charge a prominent Palestinian activist. The TPS charged Ahmad Hajahmad with “Participating in or Contributing to Activities of a Terrorist Group” for offering rhetorical support for Hamas’ armed resistance to Israeli colonial rule. As the Globe and Mail reported, “according to experts, the Toronto Police’s allegations against Mr. Hajahmad are potentially novel because they stem from words he said during a protest, which police say furthered the interests of Hamas.”

While they target a Palestinian Canadian for his words at demonstrations, they ignore Jewish Torontonians providing verbal, organizational, monetary and other material assistance to Israeli violence against Palestinians.

Over the past two decades Toronto power couple Heather Reisman and Schwartz have put $200 million into the HESEG Foundation for Lone Soldiers. Incredibly, the billionaires recoup most of their donations through “charitable” tax credits despite supporting non-Israelis joining an occupation force brutalizing Palestinians. HESEG violates Canada Revenue Agency rules for registered charities, which state that “supporting the armed forces of another country is not” charitable activity.

Many other Toronto registered ‘charities’ assist the Israel (illegal) occupation forces (IOF). Some have also provided funds for West Bank colonizers to purchase arms, as a recent Al Jazeera documentary “Complicit: How the West is Helping Israel Seize the West Bank” details.
Many Jewish private schools, which are registered charities, push young Toronto Jews to join a force killing and dispossessing Palestinians. At Toronto’s Bnei Akiva (Or Chaim) high school a significant proportion of the students join the IOF. A July 2024 Canadian Jewish News podcast about an alumni gravely injured while serving on an army base in the illegally occupied Shebaa Farms, quoted the mother of a student in the school saying “a quarter of the class” joined the Israeli military.

The school almost certainly violates the Foreign Enlistment Act. According to that law, “Any person who, within Canada, recruits or otherwise induces any person or body of persons to enlist or to accept any commission or engagement in the armed forces of any foreign state or other armed forces operating in that state is guilty of an offence.”

In February, the Israeli military noted that 1,500 Canadians were in the IOF. Considering the incredible destruction the Israeli military wrought in Gaza and elsewhere, any of them who return to Canada should be investigated for violating Canada’s War Crimes Act and Crimes Against Humanity. It notes, “Every person who, either before or after the coming into force of this section, commits outside Canada (a) genocide, (b) a crime against humanity, or (c) a war crime, is guilty of an indictable offence and may be prosecuted for that offence.”

Dozens of individuals currently in Toronto have likely killed Palestinians, but it doesn’t appear any of these genocidaires have been charged or even investigated.

Canadian law also criminalizes promoting genocidal ideology. Under Canada’s Criminal Code “Every person who advocates or promotes genocide is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than five years.” Many Canadians have openly defended and promoted Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

For the legal system, including the police, to have legitimacy it must treat all equally. It cannot selectively enforce laws against people who the powerful want to prosecute and ignore enforcement of laws against those who have the ears of the police.

The charge against Ahmad Hajahmad highlights anti-Palestinian racism. It must be opposed.

The charge against Hassan Hajahmad confirms the importance of abolishing Canada’s civil liberties violating, anti-Palestinian, terrorism list. The charge must be dropped.

Wednesday it was reported that 33-year-old anti-genocide activist Ahmad Hassan Hajahmad was charged with “Participating in or Contributing to Activities of a Terrorist Group.” The offence carries a maximum of 10 years in jail.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) release about the arrest mentions two speeches Hajahmad made at anti-genocide demonstrations on May 25 and September 7, 2024 “where he used amplification devices to make public statements that advocated for the detestation and harm against members of the Israeli and Jewish communities.”

While I’ve been unable to find the first speech, a 1:41 minute clip of the Sept. 7 one posted by arch genocidal X account Leviathan is totally innocuous. There’s no “detestation” or “harm” expressed whatsoever. All that Leviathan cites as evidence against Hajahmad is a reference to “our spokesperson”, which is purportedly a representative of Hamas.

Seven months after the second speech the police raided Hajahmad’s house and seized electronic devices. The statement by the Zionist-dominated Toronto Police noted, “A joint investigation by the Toronto Police Service Hate Crime Unit and INSET subsequently gathered evidence supporting the allegation that the accused acted for the benefit of, and in association with, Hamas, a designated terrorist group.”

In response, Hajahmad’s lawyer, Mohamed El Rashidy, told the press, “He faces a single charge arising from speaking at public demonstrations. No violence, no weapon, no one harmed. Speaking out at a protest about the killing of civilians is protected expression, not terrorism.”

As with other TPS moves, this case appears to be part of its anti-Palestinian activities. To target opponents of genocide under the guise of combatting hate the TPS greatly expanded its Project Resolute. After complaints from genocide advocates, they banned protests on a city overpass and in a neighbourhood because three in ten people living there are Jewish. Chief of TPS Myron Demkiw has repeatedly been photographed with Zionist vigilantes and had multiple calls with billionaire Zionist Heather Reisman after posters and fake blood were placed on an Indigo bookstore denouncing her role in “funding genocide”. As a result, the police launched pre-dawn raids on a dozen peoples’ homes and charged individuals with hate crimes for putting up posters and using water-soluble paint.

In their release the TPS use the arrest of Hajahmad to promote its new Counter-Terrorism Security Unit. “These complex investigations underscore the importance of continuing to strengthen our Counter Terrorism Security Unit so we can identify and investigate evolving threats to public safety”, it notes. In March the TPS established this unit to “substantially increase the resources dedicated to countering terrorism and violent extremism,” noted Demkiw. Framed as a response to shots fired at empty synagogues and the US consulate, the unit has led to police patrolling with semi-automatic machine guns in a bid to intimidate opponents of Jewish supremacist colonialism.

As has happened with police repressing anti-genocide activists across the country, the charges against Hajahmad will likely collapse. In recent days the charges against Palestine activist Wesam Cooley in Calgary and an Ottawa protester were abandoned. In Toronto dozens of individuals, including in the Indigo case, have had their charges quietly dropped by the Crown.

Irrespective of what happens with the charges against Hajahmad, they’ve served part of their political purpose. “ANTI-ISRAEL PROTEST LEADER CHARGED WITH TERRORISM OFFENCE OVER ALLEGED HAMAS LINKS”, noted Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center while another genocidal Jewish supremacist posted, “For 1st time, Police have evidence that protest organizers are aligned with terror groups.” Former Jewish Defence League head Meir Weinstein wrote, “Toronto Hamas Supporter Ahmad Hassan Hajahmad Charged With Terrorism Offences Today & He Has Been A Featured Speaker At The Muslim Association Of Canada Conference. Israel Now Calls On Canada Revenue Agency To Investigate The Charitable Status Of The Muslim Association Of Canada!”

Even if somehow Hajahmad were found guilty of “Participating in or Contributing to Activities of a Terrorist Group”, the post-9/11 law is the problem. Canada’s terrorism list violates due process and is deeply anti-Palestinian. Over 10 percent of Canada’s terror list is made up of organizations headquartered in a long-occupied land representing one-tenth of one percent of the world’s population. Representing much of Palestinian political life, eight of the oppressed nation’s organizations are listed.

There are also at least two Canadian-based groups that have been added to the terror list for supporting Palestinians. In October 2024 the Liberals listed the grassroots Vancouver activist organization Samidoun Palestinian Prisoners Solidarity Network.

With the coming into force of Bill C-9 last weekend, it is now a crime to display Samidoun’s logo in front of a religious institution hosting an Israeli general. The Combatting Hate Act reinforces the terror list in service of Zionism by criminalizing the display of listed “terror” groups’ symbols in certain contexts.

In recent weeks pro-genocide groups have called to list Palestine Action Canada and Masar Badil as terror organizations. They will keep pushing their authoritarian genocidal Jewish supremacy until stopped politically.

There are dozens of individuals currently in Toronto who’ve recently killed while serving with the Israeli military in Gaza, Lebanon and elsewhere. It doesn’t appear a single one of these genocidaires have been charged or even investigated. But the police have charged an individual who has repeatedly protested genocide.

Shame on all Canadians if we allow this foreign-inspired, pro-Israel authoritarianism to continue.

*The Avichay Adraee Network, We Want to Live and the June 26 Movement*

I am proud to share this peer-reviewed research article I have authored, “The Avichay Adraee Network, We Want to Live and the June 26 Movement,” published by the al-Zaytouna Centre for Research and Consultations in Beirut.

This article, which was the byproduct of years of close research, traces the genealogy of what Palestinian activists and resistance actors have increasingly described as the “Avichay Adraee Network,” a transnational Arabic-language media ecosystem linking normalization initiatives, anti-Hamas activism, and collaborator formations in Gaza. Beginning with the 2019 “We Want to Live” protests and following the evolution of actors such as Moumen al-Natour, the study examines the emergence of interconnected institutions, including the Center for Peace Communications, the Arab Council for Regional Integration, and Jusoor News. It argues that these organizations cultivated a shared media and political infrastructure that, following the outbreak of Operation al-Aqsa Flood, expanded beyond advocacy into projects focused on alternative governance, “safe zones,” and the promotion of post-Hamas political arrangements. By situating the “June 26 Movement” within this broader trajectory, the article contends that the “Avichay Adraee Network” represents the culmination of a years-long effort to construct a soft-power apparatus capable of shaping political discourse, cultivating local intermediaries, and advancing new forms of political organization in Gaza.

This article is, to my knowledge, the most extensive historical study of this network. Alongside my Electronic Intifada article, I consider it to be my most important piece of research yet. It is linked below.

Today is the anniversary of Saleh Shehadeh’s shahāda of 22 July 2002. Shehadeh was arguably the most foundational military figure within the Palestinian Islamic Resistance movement, beginning his intelligence and armed resistance work in 1981 (7 years before Hamas’ formation). He formed the Daʿwah Security Service and al-Majd, culling figures like Yahya al-Sinwar to target collaborators before auguring the groundwork for the Islamic movement’s first armed cells (the “al-Mujahidun al-Filastiyyun”). It is from this that the Qassam Brigades eventually emerged.

On 3 December 2000, approximately one and a half years prior to Shehadeh’s being targeted by the occupation, he gave an in-depth interview to the Marxist intellectual Nimr Murqos.

Some months ago, I was able to retrieve a handwritten archival physical copy of the transcript from this interview, which I have translated in full. The translation is linked in the comments with an excerpt below.

[Shehadeh:] The military apparatus was also established in 1981. [...]

In that group were Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, may God prolong his life; Sheikh Mujahid Abdul Rahman Tamraz Abu Maher, who was responsible for military operations; Sheikh Muhammad (Dr. Muhammad Shah); brother Mujahid Muhammad Abdullah; brother Mujahid Muhammad Samara; and brother Mujahid Sabir (Muhammad Sabir Abu Odeh). I was the last member of the group. Brother Ahmed al-Malik later left for Yemen, and Ibrahim al-Maqadma went into hiding for a week before being arrested. This group formed the movement’s foundational cell, but shortly after its formation we were arrested and sent to prison. My brothers who were imprisoned with Abu Maher received 12-year sentences. Other brothers arrested with them were sentenced to 10 years, 8 years, and 3½ years. Brother Muhammad Sabir Abu Odeh and I were each sentenced to two years in prison. I truly saw the horrors of prison. It was not the horror of interrogation that struck me, but rather the systematic violation of prisoners’ rights and their dignity. […] I left prison thinking only about how to get these prisoners out.

When I left prison, we had a plan to rebuild the military apparatus. […] we put that plan into action about two weeks later and recruited a number of young men into the military apparatus. The military apparatus was called the Islamic Resistance Movement, and it could bear no other name. The name “Islamic Resistance Movement” was dear to all of us across every cell in which we worked. After recruiting these young men into the Islamic Resistance Movement, we trained them. We then established the security apparatus. When the security and military apparatuses joined forces, the new organization was named the Jihad and Da’wa, the Movement of Jihad and Da’wa, abbreviated as “Majd.” This name referred to the combined military and security apparatus after the two were merged.

They [viz., the Zionist occupation] sought to confine part of the Palestinian people within a cage: first by placing the Palestinian Authority in a cage through military marginalization, then by bringing Hamas into that same cage and shutting it on both parties to the conflict. The people will become a volcano […] wielding weapons of liberation rather than weapons of destruction against the Palestinian people, as the Zionists intended.

Zuhdi was Imprisoned at just 15 in 1974 Askalan, occupied Palestine (israel), self-taught Palestinian artist Zuhdi al-Adawi used art as a form of defiance. With forbidden crayons smuggled in by family, he used pillowcases and handkerchiefs as his canvas to depict the raw reality of prison life.

Even when discovered and thrown into solitary confinement, his spirit never broke. His pillowcase drawings were folded up and covertly smuggled out, telling the story of Palestinian resistance to the world.

Upon his release in 1985 through a high-profile prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and the PLO, Zuhdi was exiled to Lebanon, where he immediately sought to formalize his craft by studying at the Center for the Visual Arts. He later relocated to Damascus, Syria, settling in a refugee camp where he continued to live, experiment with new artistic styles, and paint. Decades after his freedom, his smuggled prison art gained widespread recognition, eventually being featured globally in major exhibitions like "Made in Palestine" and inspiring the acclaimed 2011 documentary film, Crayons of Askalan.

“My brothers in the [Hamas] movement have entrusted me with a great trust at a critical and sensitive juncture in the history of our national cause.

Our patient and steadfast Palestinian people, our Arab and Islamic nation, and the members of our resistance movement, I speak to you today, having been entrusted by my brothers in our resistance movement with a heavy trust under which the mountains would buckle.

It is a great trust and a great responsibility by its very nature. How much more so now that we are in a critical and sensitive phase in the history of our national cause? This trust is the trust of the righteous martyrs who planted this blessed tree and watered it with their pure, noble blood until it grew strong and stood firm upon its stalk, delighting the farmers and infuriating the enemies.

The first thing we affirm is that we will follow the same path [of resistance] and the same steps, carrying the banner high until it comes to rest above al-Aqsa and the lands of a free and proud Palestine, for which the free and sincere from all the forces and factions of our people and its righteous sons have strived and struggled.

I affirm that we will follow the same path and the same steps, and continue working on every front and in every direction until we lift the harm and pain from you.

O people of Gaza, my family and my people, with whom I have spent my entire life, we know you and you know us. We understand how much you have suffered, continue to suffer, and are in pain, and the wounds that have afflicted you. You live in tents and the remnants of destroyed houses. You sleep on the ground and use the sky as your blanket. How many days have passed without you finding your daily sustenance, or food to give patience to your crying children?

I say to you that these tears are precious to us, and that the pain you are enduring is in our breasts and hearts. We affirm to you that, God willing, we will continue to work on every front and in every direction until we lift the harm and pain from you, and restore to Gaza the life of dignity befitting its dear, proud, and patient people, until we once again see the beautiful, radiant Gaza as we once knew it.

We will work by every means to restore life to the Gaza Strip.

One of our priorities is restoring a life of dignity for our people in Gaza, as this is an inherent right of our people.

And we are certain that, together, we are capable of achieving this through much serious work with the loyal members of our people, our nation, and the free people of the world, those who have stood with Gaza and regard it as a symbol of humanity, liberation, and the struggle against injustice.

We appreciate the role of the mediators in Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, who are doing everything in their power to stop the bloodshed in the Gaza Strip.

Our first and clear priority is a comprehensive end to the occupation’s aggression, killing, and terrorism, and the achievement of a complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. We hereby call on the countries sponsoring the negotiation process to exert real pressure on the extremist right-wing occupation government to implement what has been agreed upon and to proceed with the transition to the next phase.

I emphasize a number of priorities, foremost among them a complete halt to Israeli aggression.

The “Avichay Adraee Network,” a moniker used to describe a group of diasporic agents, has, using social media, exhorted the occupation’s military to target jeeps in Gaza, leading to dozens of strikes and the loss of many lives over the last few weeks. The latest includes the targeting of a security jeep belonging to the al-Rimal al-Tayyiba Company in Khan Yunis, resulting in three shahīds.

A few days ago, the collaborator Hamza al-Masri, who is based in Turkey and is the subject of a formal complaint, escalated his incitement to target Jeeps under the pretext that they belong to Hamas. Hamza al-Masri’s complicity in the occupation’s recent assassinations of police officers and attacks on civilian vehicles is evinced by a series of fabrications that he published on social media, some of which he deleted after the attacks took place.

Months ago, the collaborator Saeed Masoud posted on his page that “Israel must strike every jeep.” Also part of this network is Baraa Jamal from the al-Daraj neighborhood. In his posts, he called for the bombing of “any jeep in Gaza.”

Yesterday, agent Abdul Hamid Abdul Ati gleefully celebrated the occupation targeting a jeep belonging to the al-Rimal al-Tayyiba Company, which has been operating for two years. Abdul Ati was among the first to incite the targeting of jeeps and other vehicles in Gaza, especially after the failure of the “June 26 Movement,” of which he was a leading figure. Abdul Ati, who has also called for police names to be published and violently targeted, received favorable coverage as a mere “Hamas critic” from +972 Magazine on the day prior to the failed incendiary movement.

*The Hamas Prisoners Faction*

One of the most important facets of the Hamas consultations that elected Khalil al-Hayya was the participation of the prisoners faction as a separate body.

Hamas’ four constituencies within its Consultative Body (majlis ash-shûrâ) and Political Bureau (maktab al-siyâsî) consist of: Gaza, West Bank, prisons, and diaspora. According to Hamas scholar Leila Seurat, in the occupation prisons, Hamas is made up of twenty-three members.

The 2021 elections presented an issue for the prisoners' participation. In December 2020, Hamas completed the election of a new leadership for the “Supreme Leadership Committee” in the occupation's prisons, resulting in prisoner Salama al-Qatawi being elected chairman, prisoner Abd al-Nasser Issa as his deputy, and 13 prisoners as members representing the movement’s prisoners in various prisons. A senior Hamas source revealed that the prisoners were, at this point, demanding that the prisons be recognized as a “fourth region” in the movement’s then forthcoming elections, and that the elected chairman of the committee automatically become a member of the new Political Bureau, while his deputy would become a member of the General Shura Council. That is, prisoners would have a representative on the Political Bureau, although the movement’s bylaws stipulated that the committee’s chairman and deputy chairman represent the prisoners in the Shura Council. A prominent Hamas leader in the West Bank and Minister of Prisoners’ Affairs in the 10th government, Wasfi Qabha, defended the prisoners’ right to representation on the Political Bureau. Qabha expressed his dissatisfaction with the representation of prisoners, remarking that “It is unacceptable for prisoners to have no representative, and for those representing the West Bank to be members residing outside it.”

A retrospective published by Felesteen on August 4, 2021, stated that Hamas’s six-month electoral process proceeded through its three regions—Gaza, the West Bank, and abroad—after the movement had completed the selection of its leadership body in the occupation prisons.

During the August 2024 emergency elections, the prisoners faction was unable to participate. Ultra Palestine’s 28 December 2025 reporting described the General Consultative Council then being assembled as a 71-member body drawn from the three regional consultative councils—Gaza, the West Bank, and abroad—plus ten representatives of the military wing and ten additional members drawn from the regions. It did not list a separate prisoners’ delegation or prison consultative council. The same report said the elections would reveal the heads of the movement’s “three regions”: Gaza, the West Bank, and abroad. (In January 2021, it had reported that the prisoners constituted "al-dāʾira al-shūriyya al-rābiʿa"—“the fourth consultative constituency”—after the external, Gaza, and West Bank constituencies, and that they were demanding their own seats in both the Political Bureau and the General Consultative Council.)

According to Hamas' communiqué published today, “our heroic prisoners in the occupation’s jails who participated in this consultative process [leading to al-Hayya's election] was despite the significant restrictions,” before the movement affirmed that “the prisoners’ cause and their release will remain at the top of its priorities.” This is an important step in the democratic Shura process that heralds the prisoner faction's autonomous representation.

Congratulatory Message from Quds Force Sardar Qaani to Khalil al-Hayya

Sardar Ismail Qaani, Commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, in a message following the election of Khalil al-Hayya as head of Hamas’s Political Bureau, congratulated the prominent figures within Hamas and all the fighters of this great Islamic resistance movement.

According to an IRNA report on Monday night, the full text of Commander Qaani’s congratulatory message is as follows:

With congratulations on the election of Dr. Khalil al-Hayya as head of Hamas’s Political Bureau, I must also extend my congratulations to the distinguished figures within Hamas and to all the fighters of this great Islamic resistance movement.

By electing a figure who is a symbol of resistance and shahāda, they have once again demonstrated their continued commitment to the path of Islamic resistance.

The Zionist regime must inevitably accept that, despite all the crimes it has committed, not only has it failed to stop the resistance, but the Islamic resistance is stronger today than ever, and will continue on its proud path.

According to a report by IRNA, the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announced today, Monday, in a statement the election of Khalil al-Hayya as head of the movement’s Political Bureau and stated that al-Hayya has succeeded the previous head of Hamas’s Political Bureau, the shahīd Yahya Sinwar.

Yahya Sinwar served as head of Hamas’s Political Bureau for approximately 2 months and 10 days (from August 6, 2024, until his shahāda on October 16, 2024).

In that position, he succeeded Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated on July 31, 2024.”
