The severe and excessive sentencing of female driver Sadia Bajaaj exposes exactly what we already know of Somalias’ civil justice system. That “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.”

Sadia’s case isn't an isolated incident; it’s a symptom of a rotten system.

As a woman, outside the dominant major clans, she is prey to systematic targeting by the police, the attorney general, and the courts; all to satisfy authoritarian demands.

Unsurprisingly, both the women-led/minority led @Somalia_NIHRC and @MFamily_HRD have looked the other way in total silence.

Balqiis Insights is deeply saddened and concerned by the recent reported incident involving a young girl in Mogadishu. We stand in solidarity with the survivor and her family and call for a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation to ensure accountability and justice.

This incident is a stark reminder that violence against women and girls continues to threaten the safety, dignity, and rights of women and girls across Somalia. Preventing such violence requires stronger protection measures, accessible support services for survivors, and sustained efforts to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable and that the rights of women and girls are upheld.
