It’s honestly pretty upsetting to see this. Alberta seemed to be the one province in Canada genuinely offering young Canadians good job opportunities and housing affordability.
This decision will only lead to higher housing prices long term, which I suppose is great for existing owners but it’s just another example of governments pulling up the ladder of opportunity on the next generation.
Edmonton in particular was probably the only city in the country permissive enough to growth that demand would translate into new supply rather than higher prices, and ultimately this will change that.
It’s so frustrating because a lot of Canadians want growth and opportunity to make their lives better, but reject the change that comes when growth and opportunity actually occur. It’s a huge problem, and I’m not sure how we build a better country when so few are willing to accept minor inconveniences that benefit others enormously.
Ultimately, when I talk about our cultural and economic decline, it’s exactly this reasoning that is the culprit.
I think this is the most important thing we need to stress. For those who are concerned about catching Covid, high-quality masks are amazing at preventing infection. This is more important than trying to force people to wear ineffective cloth masks.
🧵 (3/3): High-quality masks will continue to be available free-of-charge at our InfoLink desks. Over 3,000 masks have been given out in the past week. Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe. ❤️
At the same time, isn't it unfair to force the high school student earning less than adult minimum wage at your favourite store to enforce this mandate?
A reminder for today.
The high school student earning less than adult minimum wage at your favourite store who politely reminded you to mask up is not going to be able to change the City of Edmonton's bylaw, no matter how much you yell at them.
@CityofEdmonton instead of forcing people to wear masks that don’t work, why don’t we start doing things that actually make a difference? We should be encouraging the at risk groups to wear high quality masks. 1-way masking works. Cloth masks do not. So stop the mandate.
If cloth masking does not work & it doesn't, wearing a cloth mask around immunocompromised to make us feel better actually jeopardizes their life.
Lying about evidence for a cloth mask has resulted in many casualties due to false information
Road to hell paved w good intent
Active case counts should not be the metric the city uses. By that logic, every winter when cases spike will we all be forced to wear masks even if hospitalizations and deaths remain low? Active cases should no longer matter as we move out of this pandemic.
On March 1, @YourAlberta will lift most provincial masking requirements. #YEG's Temporary Mandatory Face Coverings Bylaw will remain in effect until further action is taken… (1/2)
