PhD student at @CamHistory @CamGradPTIH - politics, histories, and cultures of science in mid-C20 Britain. Editor with Doing History in Public @historyinpublic
@rohn_jawls the principle of Chancel Repair Liability in England, where people who buy property on certain former church lands can be legally obligated to pay (up to £100'000) for repairs to their local parish church
Articles in other disciplines that have to justify why they're doing history are so good. "Events in human affairs often unfold in temporal sequence (Johnson 1983). Some argue that there exist causal relations that can be understood through retrospective study (Valdez 2013)."
@resurrecti0ns Even if you (as presumably the OP does) believe that witchcraft exists as a real, material phenomena shaping modern society - wouldn't that vindicate studying it *even more*?
Starmer should immediately & unequivocally ban access to British airspace to US warplanes. The UK must not be accomplice to a US President who is threatening more war crimes. Period.
@R3mus16@nob0dy_0327@nikicaga Oxbridge has 0% mandatory attendance for most subjects! It's much less of a thing in the UK, as far as I can tell - if you miss a tutorial, then that could be bad - but missing/skipping lectures only counts against you in so far as you end up missing useful material for exams!
@LovejoyActual i reread the first two novellas the other week and had completely forgotten how much of the Fossoways' dialogue consists of apple-based puns....they're thriving
@royllovians This is kinda Weber's thesis, right?! The world-historical tragedy of Protestantism as inadvertently sowing the seeds for the hollowing-out of its own ethical life etc., via disenchantment
every one of Chotiner's interviews is so devastating but in the exact same way; the interview subject doesn't see themselves as taking political positions that come from a self-consciously or self-awarely constructed ideology. to them all their actions are personal & natural.
The digital ID cards contract will go to Palantir, won’t it? An authoritarian policy dressed up in anti-migrant rhetoric, funnelling public money to a shady American tech firm. You couldn’t invent a more Starmerite scheme.
@nolightupstairs@bengrossbg Wait, Karl Polanyi was antisemitic? I know he was kicked out of university for physically retaliating against antisemites - what changed?
