Hey Twitter- I'm getting close to wrapping things up! I'll be defending my PhD work on June 20th, at 9 AM MT. I'll talk about SOM fractionation methods, MAOM nitrogen, yield stability, PyOM persistence, and everything in between.
Hope y'all can tune in-- DM me for a Teams link!
Some of the last work from my PhD, really glad it's out in the world. Thanks to all who contributed! If you want to chat about it or need a copy, feel free to shoot me an email or a DM.
We had a new paper out last week: https://t.co/SBRVKaM5Wp
We show that, under lab conditions, MAOM can contribute a significant amount of N to the inorganic N pool (up to ~75% of the total!). This proportion was moderated by the POM:MAOM and the POM C:N ratio.
An important point is that POM was still more accessible (a greater proportion of the original POM-N was mineralized), there's just a lot of MAOM-N in most soils. That balance determines the make-up of the mineral N pool.
Excited to share our new Policy Analysis in the @SciPolJournal Winter Issue! With Helen Silver, @MeganMachmuller & Dr. Jane Zelikova, we explore how diversified ag systems impact soil carbon, soil health & yields.

@Sajjad_Razza Great paper, Sajjad! A key point and one that isn’t considered enough. I’m curious your thoughts about breeding for conservation.
Are there opportunities to improve some of our regenerative practices via breeding as well (region/soil adapted cover crops, root architecture, etc)?
Unfortunately, due to limited staff availability, we will have to cancel our student volunteer program for 2025 and suspend new arrangements for prospective meteorology students to shadow at our office until further notice. We are very sorry for these developments!
Very excited to have this out (and in Nature Geoscience, no less!).
We returned to in-field incubations of isotopically enriched litter and pyrogenic OM ten years after inception, and were able to glean some insights into the persistence patterns of the SOM that was formed.
There's a lot more to this paper, and I encourage you to check it out if you're thinking about formation and persistence of POM and MAOM.
I feel very grateful to have gotten to work on it -- a special thank you to @jso_soong, @KonzaLTER, and @USDA_NIFA for making it possible.
So glad #MFCotrufoNeedsTwitter is an #AGU2024 fellow this year! She is an outstanding scientist and truly caring mentor. She is so deserving and I am so grateful to have been trained by her 👩🏻🔬
