Sunni Muslims believe a final messianic figure called the Mahdi will rise at the end of days, conquer the world, and impose Islamic rule everywhere. He cannot do it alone. Today, Sokoto is the sole remaining caliphate that fits prophecy.

The prophecy also says he will lead an army. That role is being fulfilled by the Fulani tribe.
