WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ZAMA FHE and AZTEC?
@Zun2025 asked and I'm here to answer.
First, I want us to understand that both @zama_fhe and @aztecnetwork want to bring privacy to the blockchain but they have a differing approach to achieve that.
Let me explain.
Aztec is a privacy-first Layer 2 solution built on Ethereum, using zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) like zk-SNARKs & PLONK to enable confidential transactions and smart contracts.
On the other hand, Zama is a cross-chain blockchain protocol that enables confidential smart contracts on any L1 and L2 using Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE).
In practical, here's how they work:
- Aztec Network gives users full privacy by using zkSNARKs, which act like cryptographic receipts that prove a transaction is correct without exposing any sensitive information. As an L2, Ethereum can verify the math behind the transfer using zero knowledge proofs, but it never sees the sender, recipient, amount, or balances involved, ensuring that all details stay completely private.
- With Zama, it leverages Zama’s state-of-the-art Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) technology, which enables computing directly on encrypted data. This is used to build a confidential layer on any L1 or L2 which allows end-to-end encryption of transaction inputs and state amidst others.
Now, I will compare the two across the following categories - Security, Decentralization, Verifiability, Scalability, Composable, and Ease of Use.
- Security
To achieve a secure protocol, Aztec uses zero knowledge proofs while Zama uses FHE. In reality, both are secure enough for a normal CT rn but it is worth noting that FHE is post quantum so it can withstand attacks by future quantum computers.
- Decentralization
Aztec is a beneficiary of Ethereum decentralized platform so there are no concerns, as for Zama, the fhevm adds extra decentralized operators and takes advantage of MPC to make it even more decentralized.
- Verifiability
Using zero knowledge proofs, Aztec is verifiable on the blockchain, For Zama FHEVM, it is possible for anyone can recompute the FHE operations and verify them.
- Scalability
Aztec batches transactions into a single proof which also slashes gas fees and improves its scalability a lot. As for Zama, the tech behind its fhevm is optimized but we have to rely on great hardware to scale things, and the team has plans for that already with FHE ASICs. I think Aztec takes it here.
- Composability
The Aztec Network is designed to be composable to accommodate existing token contracts and other functional goals like having asset names and transaction volumes private but assets prices public.
On the other hand, Zama fhevm is composable between confidential contracts, as well as with non-confidential ones, so devs can build on top of other contracts, tokens and dapps.
- Ease of Use
On the user's end, there is not much difference in this aspect as both are easy to use. For Devs, there's not much learning curve either as Zama fhevm works with Solidity and Rust.
Conclusion
Aztec Network is a privacy first L2 blockchain that is built on Ethereum using zero knowledge proofs to enable confidential transactions and smart contracts while Zama is a confidential layer that can exist on any existing L1 or L2 using Fully Homomorphic Encryption.
I see Aztec being a more viable option in the core DeFi spaces for institutions and users who want to enjoy privacy with their transactions. Zama, on the other hand, has a wider range of usage as the core tech can be used in places where data needs to processed on-chain without being exposed at all.

@ogheneyxle@mr_orero I still dey explain to one that the easiest way to let people know you don't like the patriarchy is to actually let go of the flimsy benefits you get from it and she no gree. I just laugh 😂
@renieeee__@Victor_Ude19 it's probably because you ate late and ate twice also, would cause a spike in sugar levels which makes you feel tired and hungrier in the morning. I face the same here too.
If you wait till 11-12 today, you'd see the hunger will subside naturally and it'll be like other mornings
