When I say state entities need to learn more about transparency from the new kid on the block, GoldBod, I really mean it.
The 2025 trading reports are publicly available again. You can get a weekly breakdown of how much money the Bank of Ghana provided to GoldBod, how much gold was expected to be supplied, how much was actually supplied, and the variances.
The 2025 trade reports show a variance of 3.8 billion cedis. Most of that came from inflows towards the end of the year. That amount is also recorded as a payable to the Bank of Ghana in the audited financial statements of Goldbod.
If you’re a state entity that has existed for many years and can’t even publish an annual report, you really need to sit up!
Like all patriotic Ghanaians, I am deeply concerned about the recent report of a drug bust in another jurisdiction, the origin of which was traced to one of Ghana’s ports.
Clearly, these incidents could have only been occasioned by weak monitoring and inspection systems at our ports.
In Ghana, the body mandated to monitor, regulate, enforce and control the trafficking of narcotics is the Narcotics Contol Commission (NACOC). It is therefore intriguing, that the NACOC was completely removed from the list of Port Inspection Agencies by government in June 2018.
While it is unclear what may have informed that decision in 2018, it is evident that the said decision weakened NACOC’s port inspection function and denied them the ability to detect and prevent drug trafficking through the country’s port of entry and exit.
It is therefore refreshing to learn that President Mahama has directed that effective immediately, NACOC be restored to the list of Port Inspection Agencies and granted unfettered access to all entry and exit points; by air, land and sea.
As someone, who has closely worked with the Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey-led NACOC in fighting gold-smuggling, I am confident that with the necessary support, the NACOC will succeed in stemming this tide.
I also understand that the President has directed that all scanners and personnel at our ports be changed, effective immediately.
I believe that these measures, if implemented effectively, will strengthen checks and control at our ports to forestall the reccurrence of these unfortunate incidents.

TU Bergakademie Freiberg University of Mines, Germany Explores Partnership with GoldBod to Advance Sustainable Small-Scale Mining
Representatives from TU Bergakademie Freiberg University of Mines, Germany, have engaged the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to explore areas of collaboration aimed at strengthening responsible and sustainable artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in Ghana.
The engagement formed part of a visit facilitated by the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana) under the Market Entry Programme, which promotes international partnerships, technology transfer and collaboration.
Speaking on behalf of the German university, Prof. Ing. Martin Kressen and Dr. Ing. Martin Mensah outlined areas where the institution’s technical expertise, research experience and technologies could support Ghana’s ASM formalisation and sustainability agenda.
Discussions focused on youth skills development, technical training, environmental monitoring, responsible sourcing, traceability and post-mining landscape restoration.
Prof. Ing. Martin Kresner highlighted the university’s extensive experience in mining and the restoration of degraded mining landscapes, stressing the importance of integrating rehabilitation into mining operations and ensuring that mined lands remain useful to communities after mining.
Dr. Mensah also emphasised the need to listen to artisanal and small-scale miners and develop practical solutions that recognise their realities while supporting formalisation. He highlighted opportunities to train young professionals and develop specialised enterprises capable of providing technical services across the ASM value chain.
The engagement provided a platform for GoldBod and TU Bergakademie Freiberg to explore potential cooperation in skills development, technology and environmental sustainability as part of efforts to promote a more responsible ASM sector in Ghana.
