@DoctorKarl The sand we were laying on was fully shaded as the sun was now behind the red cliffs. The water was 25m away but was the only surface receiving direct sunlight at this time. The areas of burns suggest the UV was coming from behind us, rather than from in front (water).

Hi @DoctorKarl , After laying under a cliff in the shade I became very sunburnt. The sun had been on the cliff face all morning, but when we were laying in the shade the sun was behind the cliff. Can you get sunburnt off the red rock even if the sun is behind the cliff?
