@WorkingClassTCU Reading a story about someone struggling is one thing, but when reading a story knowing it’s based off of what actually happened to someone makes everything much more real. When reading a story that is made up, there’s a sense of, “would this actually happen?” But not in this.

@WorkingClassTCU People took this as someone who escaped this poverty and was looking down on the others who weren’t able to do what he did. It’s also hard for people to hear the harsh reality of the working class like overcoming his mother’s drug addiction.

@WorkingClassTCU HOMS is a postmodernist text because their really isn’t one direction that the book takes. There’s many different little stories within the one book and uses irony to elevate itself. For example, esperanza being born in the year of the horse which is unlucky for girls.

@WorkingClassTCU Race is becoming a big factor on where people choose to live, very different from some of our other texts because the living situation was based on your social class. It also talks about how guys and girls are separated in the neighborhood, showing a sexist take as well.

@WorkingClassTCU Esperanza seems to be a young girl who is a full embodiment of this post-modernist story telling. She’s very aware of her family situation and almost ashamed and wants a better life for herself in the future. She reminds me of Sara because she wants more than her families past.

@WorkingClassTCU The authors are trying to convey that America is not what it is cut out to be. That they have never seen this amazing America that is conveyed to the rest of the world. They want others to know they are the “servants” to the people reaping the benefits of the “New World.”

@WorkingClassTCU Race is something we haven’t dove into since we have been learning about the working class. This allows us to see other underlying issues with the so called “American Dream.” “Let America be America Again” really allows us to see this falsified hope for people of color.
